I see Higgs dosent agree with me. He has a right to his opinion. which is get a big boat for starters. I can see why. Higgs has a nassau 34. A nassau 34 is a rugged boat for an offshore voyage. I own a pearson26w certainly not an offshore ocean voyager. I have sailed it down the coast of Maine, and to Nantucket ect: The boat is stable and seaworthy. I can single hand it with no problems. im 71
The Advice I gave was trying to give was to get a boat that was stable and sea worthy. and a boat that can be handled by one person. A 30 footer is twice the size of a 25. Too big for a beginner to singlehand (my opinion)

A little clarification may be in order; when I said to start in a Lido 14, I meant BY YOURSELF or another buddy, NOT YOUR WIFE. I learned to sail in a Windmill 14, which was like learning to drive in a Maserati. My wife went twice, then said she'd go again when I became better at it. I soon moved up to a Catalina 22, and she began to come along and found she loved it.

Scott....that's because he isn't a real person. Just somebody trying to spur activity on the site. Phrases like day sailor and single-handed are phrases used by sailors and a sailor would never ask such a generic question. It's a ploy and many fell for it (I guess I'm included).

You may be right, but please don't lump all of us single-handed daysailers together.

Franklin, I've often wondered that. I figured whoever was doing it had to be real, as anyone to post a fake message would not know where Oakville, Ontario was.

No, it looks real to me

The network he's on is in Ontario. I wish I actually had the time these days to plant fake posts... ;)

Dave without knowing all the facts it's impossible to give much good advice, however,if money is not of great concern,I would look at a Nonsuch 26...not cheap, but a lot of boat for the length and they were designed so that they could be single handed (raced).I must admit I have a special place in my heart for the class as my uncle Gordon was the force behind the design (with Mark Ellis)but one of the reasons for the boats was the lack of needing to find crew....(his wife is not a sailor either)

Phil, I often look at posts and wonder if you're planting them, especially if the question has been asked a million times before and tons of information can be found in the archives. And especially on posts like this that are "hit and run" when they don't come back to answer the questions of the people answering the OP. But, I refrain and am nice to the newbies for I am still a newbie but I also did a lot of searching before I started posted.

I inteneded no offense and certainly a boat like a Pearson 26 is a fine boat and built well enough to handle anything Lake Ontario throws at it. Some of the lighter built trailer boats just are not up to heavy weather as we saw in an earlier thread with a boat that had rudder failure here because it just was not built heavy enough. I sailed an Eastwind 24 for 14 years all over Lake Michigan and it was easily up to the task.

I suppose almost anything will serve as a day sailor, but where he is located, it won't be long before other ports begin to tempt him. There are about 15 destinations in two countries within 45 miles of Oakville and to reach them one never has to make more than about a 20 mile one shot passage. How could he resist that?

My suggestion for a larger boat was partly based on the guy's wife - bigger is more comfortable. She is not an avid sailor and all of us in that situation want to try to encourage our wives to get out on the water.

I apologize if I offended you.

Dave, I say go big or stay home. I'll bet your wife would even go out sailing with you. :D

Before we all jump to "troll" conclusions a quick note to Brian D., Phil or myself can confirm or at the very least narrow down any second guessing.

I can see that Dave Witt has only ever used one IP address on this site. I don't suspect he is a troll & is certainly not a current user using any IP address they have ever logged on with before. We do get users who try to use multiple aliases to make their points but Mr. Witt does not appear to be one.

Please let's answer Mr. Witt's questions as if he is a new & legitimate user until we are proved other wise!

No, I really don't plant any posts. I suspect these come from people who are internet newbies, too. People who don't understand forum protocol or sailboats. I can also tell you there are a lot of lurkers out there. Maybe 10 to 1 or more compared to those who post often.

If I did plant posts I'd like to think I'd do a better job of it. :)

Ok, I'll try to play nice. I guess I look at it from my perspective. I did a lot of searching on here looking for info before I posted a question, however I did spend many years on a Mustang forum previously so am familiar with searches etc.

You see questions like this so often that they begin to look fake or even "planted".

Dave, come back, we'll be good, honest. :)

I hear it's going for a reduced price "as is" with slight cosmetic damage. ;)

Slight cosmetic damage on the Maltese Falcon probably costs almost as much to repair as some of the boats people on this forum own did to buy. :)

I would say the whole boat "IS" cosmetic damage to the surrounding scenery! I appreciate the fact that it sails(along with the help of many, many large electric motors) but it has got to be one of the ugliest creations I have ever seen. Hopefully it never makes it this far NE.

I bet they have to run a generator continuously just to supply the power for the electronics and motors that control the beast.
