It is most likely a Cal, however, it could also be an O'Day as O'day once use CAB. You'll have to do some research on the history of Cal boats and the brands owners. That should be relatively easy.I just bought this boat at auction without seeing her. I don't know much about sailboats. I thought it was a cal 3-30 but now I'm not sure. The hin is CAB301120174 and I haven't figured out how to pay pictures yet. All help is appreciated!
measuring was gonna be my first move this morning. Thanks for your help.CAB is the manufacturer code for Bangor Punta Marine (Cal boats). Perhaps you could measure the length to validate it is a 30 footer? It almost looks like a 27 foot model based on the ratio of the cabin trunk height in relation to the freeboard based on the photograph provided. Good luck.
I don't know if courage is the right word. I think she's solid though. I'm glad I found this group it seems like a wealth of knowledge that I will raggle advantage of and learn from. I'll try to trace the registration numbers. Thanks for your help.Welcome G2thefree,
The number 30 after CAB would suggest a 30 foot boat. Actually using a tape measure along the centerline of the boat might reveal a slightly different length than exactly 30 feet. Rounding up the inches to the next full foot would be common. Congratulations on the purchase! You are showing real courage since you "bought this boat at auction without seeing her" and " I don't know much about sailboats". You have a great opportunity to learn! This forum is a good learning tool. Ask questions, check the archives of other people's questions, and talk to people where you are keeping the boat. RE: make and model....perhaps the registration numbers on the bow plaque can be accessed in AL. Best wishes on your projects.
I noticed there were extra screw holes in the finale yesterday while looking from inside the cabin. So I think the toe rail has been replaced. What did he use Steele? Thanks for the help.Not sure about it’s CAL heritage. The bow pulpit looks similar. I have not seen a 74 Cal with that aluminum toe rail. The shear looks flat. Lapworth designed a more upsweep.
Need to compare the boat to info and design pics at sailboatdata.com
Dave decoded the HIN provided.
@G2thefree welcome to the forum.
We always like to see more pictures.I have more pictures if that would help.
Check with a magnet. More likely it is painted aluminum. If the original toe rail was teak, it was likely very beat up and replaced with the aluminum rail.I noticed there were extra screw holes in the finale yesterday while looking from inside the cabin. So I think the toe rail has been replaced. What did he use Steele? Thanks for the help.
