If there isn’t significant play in the gear on the engine side then I would question if the current pump is the right one.
Interesting. I don't see that from the pictures but should be easy to check. One side of the gear drive on the pump is nearly flush with the face of the gear, the other side has a collar that protrudes beyond the face of the gear and faces to insert into the face of the pump casing. Looking at the number of threads left exposed on picture 3 there is not much room to let the gear move enough outward to engage much more than is already engaged plus with the collar designed to fit inside the space on the pump body I'm not sure you could put it in backwards without the gear touching the pump case. There is no spacer shown on the parts drawing linked in Post 16.Looks as if the gear is installed backwards or is missing a spacer.
I did notice the low exposed thread count but I was trying to convey the idea, accomplished that. Might simply be the wrong pump. I'm sure this wasn't an easy discovery for the OP and I hope he lets us all know the resolution.Interesting. I don't see that from the pictures but should be easy to check. Boat purchased around 18 months ago. About 16 months ago while trying to track down cooling problems I replaced the pump, the old one was weeping. since then boat has traveled from Ft. Lauderdale to Hilton Head to Key West to Hilton Head to Brunswick GA where I now sit waiting for Nicole. Is this a new boat to the OP? Did someone change the pump recently?
Seems strange that it worked up until now (assuming that is true), and all of a sudden it fails and is the wrong pump?
Greg
Great find @twalker Sounds exactly like the situation is with the OP. Hope he can get the work done soon under the extended warranty. This tsb might be relevant for you. Looks like it may be your situation - potentially a warranty claim?
