Help! Engine problem :(

If there isn’t significant play in the gear on the engine side then I would question if the current pump is the right one.

Looks as if the gear is installed backwards or is missing a spacer.
Interesting. I don't see that from the pictures but should be easy to check. One side of the gear drive on the pump is nearly flush with the face of the gear, the other side has a collar that protrudes beyond the face of the gear and faces to insert into the face of the pump casing. Looking at the number of threads left exposed on picture 3 there is not much room to let the gear move enough outward to engage much more than is already engaged plus with the collar designed to fit inside the space on the pump body I'm not sure you could put it in backwards without the gear touching the pump case. There is no spacer shown on the parts drawing linked in Post 16.

Is this a new boat to the OP? Did someone change the pump recently?

Seems strange that it worked up until now (assuming that is true), and all of a sudden it fails and is the wrong pump?

I did notice the low exposed thread count but I was trying to convey the idea, accomplished that. Might simply be the wrong pump. I'm sure this wasn't an easy discovery for the OP and I hope he lets us all know the resolution.

Boat purchased around 18 months ago. About 16 months ago while trying to track down cooling problems I replaced the pump, the old one was weeping. since then boat has traveled from Ft. Lauderdale to Hilton Head to Key West to Hilton Head to Brunswick GA where I now sit waiting for Nicole.

Yes this whole thing has been very strange. The only explanation is there was just enough of an engagement between the two gears to work for a 100 hours of motoring.

If the OP bought the pump new OEM from an authorized Yanmar dealer or distributor one would hope Yanmar would honor the extended warranty. Fingers crossed.

Sounds like you have a repair path forward identified with this tsb.

If you bought the new pump and specified the correct part number to an established Yanmar parts vendor I would be "requesting," as a minimum, that they refund the purchase price of the pump since it looks like you are doing the labor yourself.

However, that is secondary to you getting back on your journey and hopefully, with a fix in mind, you'll be at that soon. :)

Jury is still out but its looking like I may have dodged a giant bullet on this one.

Spent the day on my belly laying on my belly laboriously dressing out the burrs on each tooth of the camshaft gear with some diamond tooth jewelers files I stowed in my tool kit (thinking I’d never use them). Got them all pretty well smoothed out rinsed the gear in carb cleaner, did an oil change.

On start got some black smoke (eek!) but it diminished to nothing over about 5 mins so maybe just some oil in the exhaust. Ran at the dock in forward increasing to 2600 for about 15 mins checking temps. All quite low. Engine smooth. Plenty of power. No steam, smoke, etc.

I’ll do an oil change again tomorrow, run it again for maybe 30, and call it done until Nicole passes and we start heading south again.

To close this out. Reviewed all my invoices. Nmeimac marine shipped me the incorrect pump a year ago which I installed without doing a side by side comparison first. Lesson learned there!

as far as the engine, 2 oil changes and over 40 hours on last oil change engine running like a champ. Oil still honey colored after 40+hours. Burn rate unchanged plenty of power no strange noises or smells. Tiny bit of coolant loss but hoses swelled and unseated during overheat so I will loosen, reseat, and tighten today. No coolant in oil or other way around coolant side holds pressure. No oil or fuel in water. Tiny bit of blue/black smoke on start and stir down but I accidentally overfilled oil by 1qt so that could be that. Dodged a bullet alright.

If you haven't already, you'll want to suck that extra quart out of the engine, it's not good to have too much oil, the oil can get foamed, go places it shouldn't etc.
