Would you mind taking a few pictures flat on the side of the cabins along with a few close-ups the next time you're down to the boat ? Oh yeah, you're already down to the boat so would you mind sticking your head outside the boat and taking a few close-ups of the ports. I'd like to see the construction around the glass.

Don't know if you've seen any of these videos, but here is my go-to for boat body work.

I know you're not replacing them, but if you look around you'll see the type of work Andy is into.

It's cold, rainy, and miserable up here on the Canadian Wet Coast and I keep seeing your blue skies there, so I can dream for awhile. All of my boat work is inside right now but even then, working inside with the cold pounding rain outside gets to you after a while.

Okay even though the Daytona 500 is on and I was eating my lunch, I "stuck my head out," like a prairie dog and shot a couple photos for you. And here they are Ralph!

Am I correct in assuming that you mount the new frames over the existing ports as you showed previously ?

Looks good. Will the ring cover the rest of the original parts :

Well you can see that it doesn't, but I think I can resurface the. .. would it be called a windowsill? And as well as the part that protrudes out to and past the trim ring. It's mostly cosmetic there in that I don't have a need to give it any more of a seal, at least I don't believe. I have no Port window leaks. I'm just going to give her port lights a little eyeliner and lipstick.

I guess it's like putting a bezel on a watch. You don't really do anything to the existing watch you just add a bezel. Have you seen anybody do that before? And if so was it successful or... I can't see how this could turn out to be a disaster. My worst case scenario I'm out 250 bucks on plastic window dressing.

This is just my opinion and like every other animal's rear end, we all have them...
If I have read your earlier posts correctly, you want to move up to a 40 ft. ish,
blue-water, newer sailboat. And you want your current ride to look prettier.
If that's your mid or long term goal, I think replacing the trim rings with new versions of the existing style would be appropriate. Leaving the existing port lights that don't leak alone would also be a wise move.
Anything else you do to the outside appearance that deviates drastically from the boats original "look" will turn off buyers who might consider it gaudy. :badbad:
Your boat, Your choice.

Yeah don't think I'm going to be too gaudy. But I'm not sure I'll be selling this boat either. I like being able to spend time near my son, so at least I'll have a place to stay and something to do when I come to visit. I appreciate your opinion. It's well thought. And probably good advice.

Welcome from NH. I also have H27 1984 vintage that I've added a lot of personal touches too. Seems as though I can never leave well enough alone.

Very nice indeed. I presume you made the cushions ?

A buddy of mine has always had one big welding setup after another as a hobby. Recently he figured he'd like to install new upholstery in his plane. So he bought a heavy sewing machine from Sailrite and everything else he could possible need and after a few months of practice, proceeded to make a flawless reproduction of the original upholstery in the plane. A few of his hot rod buddies saw this and paid him to re-upholster their cars. Some of them very tasteful and some of them like a Mexican bordello on a Saturday night. Blood red velvet with the diagonal buttons in 6" deep upholstery. Perfect sewing but gaudy as hell.

He finally got around to advertising himself as "Heavy Welding and Fine Sewing." Covered all fields.

I did the seat bottoms I didn't touch the backs but they were the same material as the seat bottom cushions. Was just too blah for me. But I did them very remediately not with a fancy sewing machine. But yeah you have the right piece of equipment and a little bit of talent and desire and you can make some really nice stuff. One of my boat Neighbors makes Bimini's and whatever else. He does a fine job.

Well I've gotten quite a bit done since the last time I posted I replaced the hatch in the salon area, resurfaced my non-skid, and a few more items. I've removed the handrails, the original teak and will be replacing them with stainless rails. Here's a few pictures to ponder I imagine you'll see the direction I'm going .

Mind sharing how your hatch covers are attached over the hatches ? I don't see any snaps to hold them down and I am trying to avoid adding any more snaps to the top of the cabin.

So near yet so far. I see that my gaskets go right to the edge of the frame as opposed to yours which have a good overhang of the aluminum frame :

This would mean the drawstring would have to go under the gasket and allow a path for rain water to find a way in.

Back to the drawing board.

Drag. Yeah they seem to make each one a little different

Well I've nearly finished my top side. Now it's time to begin my work in the cockpit. It is been my workshop so far, but now that's at an end. Replacing my starter panel that was lacking in virtually every area. I purchased an aluminum blank, and the other gauges and switches that I wanted, drilled it out painted it with a little seven coat pizzazz. I think it looks a little nicer than the old one as well as providing more information. I've just ripped off my crappy companionway abomination and will be replacing it with a four-piece door then I'm building. I'll include my technical drawing of it. LOL and better yet I will post the pictures of it when I complete it. But no more teak. PVC trim and polyethylene panels with lift off hinges is the plan.
