Hi Jack;

I replaced my 021 engine with a 10hp 1GM Yanmar Diesel with 2.61:1
gearbox,
13"x8" 3 blade prop and 25 mm shaft (to utilize the stuffing box and
stern bearing).
I'm very satisfied; that engine just runs and runs (a bit noisy) and
pushes me about 6.2 mph
in calm sea at 3000 rpm- (maximum 3600 rpm)
I had to make modifications for the motor mount, but it wasn't too
difficult. I did everything
myself, and the total cost was about $ 5.000.- , but I think it was
worth it.

I also have the 1GM Yanmar and it is a good overall deisel. The
disadvantages are thet it is not big enough to push a larger alternator and the boat. I
have heard of people who use a switch to power to turn the alternator on and
off.
I added a secondary pump because the lift pump on the Yanmar is not strong
enough and I was frequently bleeding the air from the system.
Normally can get 5.2 kts. in calm at 3000 RPM but one fall pushed up
Penobscot Bay against a vicious No'easter with the tide against us(runs 2 kts) with
green water wavesclear up to the dodger. We were still able to get 3 kts at
3200 RPM in some of the nastiest conditions, that I have ever seen.

Hi Paul;

I bought and installed the 1GM Yanmar in April 1996. Since then I had to
replace the
impeller twice (a very simple job), but besides this I change the oil
and filter(s) on a regular
basis. I always was very satisfied with the performance- it pushes me
about 6.2 mph at
3000 rpm and about 6.5 at 3200 rpm, though I (hardly) never go above
3000 rpm.

I'm not sure what you mean about the 'larger alternator'. I'm using 3
batteries; one I call the
house battery and use it only for lights when at anchor. The other 2 I
use alternately for the
engine. I don't recall having any problems with charging. I used to have
a solar panel, but it
broke (I'm thinking of getting another one, but leave my dog at home).
And talking about
electricity- when my boat is at the marina, I have switches for both the
positive and negative
connections and thus never any ground connection when using shore power.
More boats get
destroyed by electrolysis than by any other cause!

The larger alternator was needed during my live-aboard cruising days when our
electrical needs were higher and we would stay somewhere for several days to
several weeks in one location while on the hook
For the local overnight and vacation trips that we now do, the 35 amp
alternator with a house battery and a engine battery is adequate.
Just for fun(and a broken arm) try to start the IGM with the hand crank. It
can be done just be sure to keep any kind of dangling items clear when you get
going(this includes you and your clothes).
I chnage oil in the fall and fuel filters in the spring. I check the
impellor every spring and use waterproof plumbers grease on it and it looks like new.
Have replaced water pump bearing once. Recently had spray nozzle injector
cleaned.
Do you use some kind of lift pump? If so what type? And did you put the
fuel lift pump befor or after the secondary fuel filter?
Good sailing

Hi

Ref the lift pump. Wihelm has an older Vega (ex. Petrol version) with the fuel
tank in the starboard locker as opposed to the usual keel tank. If you have a
Vega with a number between about V1475 - V2750 then you will probabbly have
the
keel tank. As this is over a metre below the engine inlet at its lowest point
it is advisable to have an auxillary lift pump (electric). I have fitted many
engines in Vegas now and about 75% need this extra lift pump so I now put
it in
as a standard fit (only on the MD6A/B replacements).

Hope this helps a little bit

Hello Paul;

about my fuel tank- Steve is right- my old gas tank (Petrol or Benzin
over there) was a round
tank on the starboard side. I removed it and replaced it with a larger
(square) one, and fitted it
also right next to the ice-box on the starboard side. That's the reason
I don't need another pump.

About starting the 1GM- you're right- it's a duzy and doing it alone is
quite difficult- though I have
done it. It's a lot easier, however, if a second person can close the
decompression valve once the
cranking speed is up.
