Hi Paul;
I bought and installed the 1GM Yanmar in April 1996. Since then I had to
replace the
impeller twice (a very simple job), but besides this I change the oil
and filter(s) on a regular
basis. I always was very satisfied with the performance- it pushes me
about 6.2 mph at
3000 rpm and about 6.5 at 3200 rpm, though I (hardly) never go above
3000 rpm.
I'm not sure what you mean about the 'larger alternator'. I'm using 3
batteries; one I call the
house battery and use it only for lights when at anchor. The other 2 I
use alternately for the
engine. I don't recall having any problems with charging. I used to have
a solar panel, but it
broke (I'm thinking of getting another one, but leave my dog at home).
And talking about
electricity- when my boat is at the marina, I have switches for both the
positive and negative
connections and thus never any ground connection when using shore power.
More boats get
destroyed by electrolysis than by any other cause!
