I just purchased a 1989 Catalina 30. During the survey we found quite a bit of corossion on the Heat Exchanger. The survey suggested just changing the end caps, however I would feel more comfortable replacing the entire unit. Does this make sense? How big a job is this? What else should be replaced; hoses etc. Any help would be appreciated. The engine is original and is a Universal M-25XP with about 750 hours.

Pull it off and clean it up

It is quite easy to pull it off and clean it up.My unit was all green and nasty looking too..I pulled mine off and cleaned it up and out.The unit is quite well built with bronze and cooper..repainted it and it is good as new.I would be terrified to see what universal want for a new one!!!!!!! If you decide to get a new one,I know there are alternate sites on the net you can get a new one at greatly reduced prices..to replace the zinc pull the bronze plug and drill the old zinc out(it is qutie soft)and scrape the zinc out of the threads with a pick... then go to a marine store and get a new zinc to screw into it. This way the new zinc only cost a buck or so... I have the same year boat and motor as you do...If you have any question please email me at togosail@yahoo.com You should also join the C-30 email list at sailnet it is an invaluable resource. Great boat and vintage.
