I own a catalina 30 tall rig and Im thinking of going to roller furling. My question is what size sail would be best, I've been told that a 140 is better than the 150 because it doesn't have to be reefed as fast. I would like to know other people's experances and how soon they have to reef with a tall rig.

i have roller furler and i opted for a 110. when you reef you are distorting your foil and to sail with a constantly distored foil is a drag. unless you race or are in light winds all the times a 110 makes sense.

Size does matter(Genoa size that is)

We currently have a 135% RF Genoa, I am going to buy a 150% RF. We live in a Medium to light area and a 150% is about right and it will furl to 120% with good shape when needed. I Do not recommend a 110% unless you don't care about speed, even if you sail in a stronger wind area a 135% would be better, they will furl to about 110% with good shape. If you want a 135% Genoa I have one that is only about 2+ seasons old I'll sell to you for a reasonable price.

Depends on local wind conditions!

Hi there...just bought a new 270.....and was torn between getting a 150 or 135. Roller furling foresails can only be reefed so much 'till they look rather ugly in terms of sail shape. I am tickled that i made the decision to go with the 135 for use here on Lake Superior with winds averaging 15 kts. The sail rolled up to about 90-100% looks great!! Any less than that developes major wrinkles at the luff. see ya doug

110% vs 140%??

Phillp, To answer your question when to reef? is usually when you are uncomfortable with the heel or just not feeling in control(over powered, roundin up,ect).. I use a 135 and a 155, the 135 is for early spring and late fall the 155 for 80% of the year. The only reason I use the 135 is I know the winds stay in 20 to 30 kts range and I won't need more power. If I had to pick one or the other I go with the larger because, so what if you have to reef (pull on one string)all that tells me is you are moving as fast as you want to and don't need the extra sail up. But if you get stuck in lower winds a lot, you can't add sail to that 110 and you do what you can or start the engine.. bottom line is for us without a locker full of money or sails, the RF gives you a full range of sail for most conditions, but when rolled up it might be UGLY!! so you are doing your hull speed as comfortablly as possible..Get the foam luff it will take away some of the ugly..IMHO Mike WD9EOU C-38 s/v "Chute the Breeze" Michigan City, IN

Roller Furling

Phillip, I have 150 on my 82 Ctalina 30 Tall Rig and it is both easy to handle and I believe is the right size especially in light air. The key is a good roller furling I use a Schaeffer 2100 and it works great. You can get away with thenext size down but the 21oo works very well under all wind loads.

150 genoa

I use a 150 and love it. I live in kansas,we have winds that are highly variable and frequently sail useing headsail or maimsail alone. More sailwhen you want it more exciting Jim
