Manny, Don't know where or when you are starting out, but check: www.tidesonline.nos.noaa.gov/geographic , Check out the present -real time and anticipated conditions and predicdicted tides - state maps - 8551762 Delaware city; 8537121 Ship John Shoal, NJ , 8536110 Cape May, NJ It might be bettter if you are comming from NJ up the Delaware to ride the rising tide on the way up. For the 14 mile trip thru the canal you can stay over to the side if the current is on the nose and see about 1 knot less tide than out in the middle.

Consider a stop at Delaware City

Just a thought. We've made several round trips from the Chesapeake to Cape May and each time we've stopped at Delaware City Marina overnight. It's just at the east end of the C & D Canal. Might be a good break for your 19 hour trip, maiking the whole thing more enjoyable. Also, it would allow you to wait for the right tide west through the canal. Have a great trip. We bought our Hunter at Tidewater and it's a very nice town. I'm sure you'll enjoy it for your first taste of the Chesapeake.

Good info

Ross - I'll look for the almanac. Sounds like good info. S.Sauer - I'll check out the link. Good advice on staying on the side. I couple of racers at my marina told me about doing that. Mulf - Looks like stopping at Delaware City marina is in the plan. One of the guys who is going to help me bring the boat down has sailed in that area a few times and suggested we make that the target for the first day (unless we are making great time). We'll tie up there and get a good nights rest. Manny

Welcome to the neighbor hood!

Mqanny, welcome to Log pond. I love the floating docks. Like I said, I'm leaving there this year and heading south to middle river. HdG is a good town. we love the pub at Coakley's in town - great crab soups. also a good italian rest and chinese rest in town. West marine is just up the road plus you have the Todewater store just a couple of blocks away.

Thanks Shippy and Dan

Thanks for the welcome! I can't wait to get down there. I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas. I'm definitely a little concerned about the trip down but it will be a great confidence builder. Dan I wish I could bring the duck but I haven't seen him in a long time :(. He kept me company many days while working on the boat. Hopefully he is happy where ever he is. Manny

I am telling you, He ate the duck!

Manny, that's ok, there are more ducks in Havre De Grace. It sure looks like there are alot of people ready for you to land there. I hope this is a good place for you. Better for you than the duck we saw...:) r.w.landau

In Delaware City try an eatery called Crabby

Dick's. Good food, reasonable prices.

Trip to the Chesapeake

Manny enjoy the trip, as long as the weather is decent you should enjoy it. On the Delaware River stay to the edges of the channel and keep a look out behind you as the commercial ships will be on you before you know it. Running past Philly, under the bridges as well as past the airport is interesting and fun. When you make the turn into the C&D just beware of the currents as they can really churn the waters up. The canal is nice and wide but it will still pay to watch for commercial traffic as well as recreational boaters. If you're making good time and want to try other marinas there is Summit North at the railroad lift bridge and Chesapeake City another 45 mins or so further up. Summit North always has open slips and you can get fuel and pumped out. Chesapeake City has some nice resturants in town which is a 2 min walk. The Yacht Club is one of our favorites. If you're looking for crabs then try the Tap Room. The final leg to HdG will take you through some very pretty countryside. Just continue to keep an eye out for commericial traffic. Some days you may not see any, others they're all over the place. There's not a lot of room outside the channel at the upper end of the Elk but as you get down towards the Bohemia River things open up and you can run outside the channel if need be, just watch your depths. Everything is well marked so you shouldn't have any issues with finding your way. Good luck, enjoy the trip you'll be glad you made the move. Mike
