Have you ever wanted to be a Fleet Captain?

Well I gave up my blue blazer and resigned as Commodore of the Catalina 30 Fleet 32 (Lake Lanier, GA). Actually, as noted in the Mainsheet Magazine for Catalina owners, it read "Fleet reforming". I must admit nothing ever came about regarding the organization of an estimated 20+ Catalina 30 owners who are on Lake Lanier. Most owners join on eo fthe many active sailing clubs. I was volunteered for the position and never had the time to get anything done. Besides, most boats stay idle on the Lake most of the year.

So, they are looking for an indivisual that would like to be the Fleet 32 Commodore.

If you are docked anywhere on Lake Lanier, GA and wish to take on this task, I would assist in trying to gather names of boat owners and provide contact information with the Association.

Unfortunately you have to buy your own white Skipper Hat with the "scrambled eggs" all over the visor. But imagine the thrill of becomming COMMODORE or ADMIRAL of the Fleet?!

The enthusiasm is overwhelming me:eek:

Based on the response thus far, I can only assume that I just might be the only one who is a member of the International Catalina 30 Association on Lake Lanier, GA.

We'll keep it going for awhile.

For a while longer

We just bought a Catalina 30 on Lake Lanier. (Pretty Girl, now out of Aqualand Dock U) We'd love to be a part of a Catalina 30 club, but I don't know I have the time or energy to run one. (Been in that barrel several times, it really can be a thankless task...)

The enthusiasm is overwhelming me:eek:

I'm the fleet captain (PHRF I) here at WYC, so this interests me.

My first question is, 'what do you offer'?

Very few people join clubs nowadays just to join. Info can be had on the internet, and forums and facebook groups can meet a lot of the need to interact.

You have to fill a real need. The simple fact that you all own the same boat will often not cut it anymore. Plus 90% of the owners now did not buy their boats new (3rd or 4th owner), so much of the brand affinity that original owners would have had is gone.

Our fleet exists to race. Every now and then we have a fleet party. We often get interest from people that express interest to join, but don't when they hear we only have two parties a year. OK with me.

You need a real need to be filled. A leader isn't needed.

True, I doubt most of the older boats on the lake (or anywhere else) still have the original owner. That doesn't mean the current owners aren't proud of their vessel or want to share experiences with other owners of the same type of boat. As far as the internet goes, there is so much info (Good and Bad) that it can be hard to sift through it all to find what you need, and you may not even be aware of potential problems if you haven't been bitten yet. I for one still prefer to talk to a real person to sitting alone with a tablet reading contradictory info from unknown sources.

Additionally not everyone wants to race. My wife and I are looking for more of a social group. There is the Catalina 34 group on the lake, so maybe the 30 owners will end up being a subset of that group.

Their is always the Barefoot Sailing Club or Southern Sailing Club to name a few if you want to get into the social or racing scene Chris, but you probably already know that. Indeed, the 34 Catalina Group appears to be active, but nothing ever became of including the Catalina 30 owners that I can remember. I gave up my subscripti0on to Mainsheet Magazine awhile back, but in the last issue I received, I was still listed as Fleet Captain!!!!!! It would be difficult to get anything organized on Lanier with 30 owners since the boats are spread across so many marinas. The best case would be a raft up of as many 30's that be found, but where do you start?

Good luck with your new 30. Maybe we'll see you on the water sometime.

if you want to screw up you fun time get organized i am sorta of gypsy/renegade myself and found that containing that was a big mistake as a result i would rather know someone that is organized rather than be organized ...i can see where it would work for competition but not so much for social activity the best times i have ever had were freelanced and spontaneous.........good luck to those who need organization

Unfortunately interests in clubs for clubs sake has been diminishing for years. As stated earlier, information and places to ask questions have migrated to the internet. In the case of the 30s, the Yahoo and this site have proven to be more prompt and and thorough. I joined the International Association when I first bought my 30 three years ago. After waiting several months and after an inquiry my check was finally cashed. My information , boat name etc. was never listed and the Mainsheet had no active section for the 30s. Even today there is nothing new on the IA site with the exception of 1 For Sale ad. No blame here, this just is the new way of being involved in a hobby.
