Have you ever ditched your outboard remote?

Hi, I have a 2007 Hunter 25-2 with the outboard remote mounted on the steering helm. The remote and motor are tired, and are due for a replacement. I'm also considering just buying a whole new 9.9 outboard and ditching the remote altogether. The Yamaha 9.9 (long shaft, high thrust) is available with a decent length tiller, and also has the shifter incorporated into the tiller. I would steer with the rudder, of course. Has anyone done something similar? All I use the motor for is getting to/from the mooring ball.

Your setup may be a bit different but I found a properly mounted remote shift/throttle lever to be a big help. It keeps my eyes on my surroundings instead of looking for a tiller

I had an Oday 25 that came with an inoperable remote setup. The motor also had many issues.
I ditched both and put the Yamaha 9.9 High Thrust with Long Shaft on and loved it. One of the reasons I chose the Yamaha was that the shifter was on the tiller. I wouldn't put on a motor with a side shifter. Choose the power tilt option, you'll love it. It is a heavy motor to tilt manually.
I only used the motor tiller to help steering into/out of a tight slip but once out of the slip I left the motor straight and steered with the boat tiller.
Sounds like a good choice for your boat.

Not all tiller mounted shifters are made the same. Both the Yamaha and Tohatsu have the shifter mounted mid tiller as a push pull shifter. Mercury's 9.9 Prokicker outboard has a twist grip tiller that shift the engine between forward/nutral/reverse this affords great speed control when docking.
