Hatches - what to do?

I want to replace the forward hatch on my Starwind 27. The existing hatch has a manufacturers name on it - Gray Enterprises from Tampa, Fla. I wasn't able to locate them until I found the web site for Bomar/Gray (I am assuming that there must have been a merger). So I looked at the online catalogue and found several choices and I am now confused as to what product will serve our needs best. The Sea Breeze Cruising line is low profile and offers a venting hatch that seals out water. The Sea Breeze Offshore line is high profile but functions the same. There is a trim ring offered that fits a screen. Venting seems like it would be a big plus if it actually works without leaking. If you have the screen installed, does that mean it is permanently fixed and you can't use the hatch to stow headsails? What is the difference between low and high profile in the way they function? The 2 lines I mention seem to have a hatch offered in a size that best replicates the existing hatch. There are other lines available at a range of costs. Molded hatches seem to be cheaper, cast aluminum more expensive. Also the port lights on my boat leak just a little but the glass is crinkled (not exactly broked or cracked - but crazed). There are 2 on each side that I want to replace. They are not rectangular, rather, they are rectangular on one end but trapezoidal on the other end (I don't know what the shape is called). They must be of a standard size but I can't find a source for what I need to fit the openings. Any help, suggestions, opinions, etc. would be greatly appreciated!

pompanette.com

Give Pompanette a call after getting their phone number at the link below. Have the measurements for the hatch so they cal help you pick a replacement. To get a good fit on the new hatch, it cshould be a little bigger, or the same size as the old one, so you can trim bake the hole to fite the new hatch tightly. David Lady Lillie

Thanks David -

The Pompanette website was where I found the Bomar/Gray catalogue and before talking to them, I was looking for some feedback on their various products, not knowing which seems to best suit most sailors needs. The one product that I am most inclined to use has a hatch size that exactly fits the dimensions of the original hatch in all measurements. I had a new thought about the port windows. If I can remove the inside flange, shouldn't I be able to take the original glass out and simply replace the window pane? Then I could make sure everything is sealed well and re-assemble - good as new, right?

High Profile Extruded 2000 Series

This is the series we are using for the trapeziodal forward hatch (#2092) of our h27's. I put one in two years ago, and we are very happy with it. I suspect the same series has your size, too. Or one of their people can get you the right alternative. David Lady Lillie
