I am looking for suggestions for installing window screen material on top of or under (cabin side) hatches. I thought about a box type cover for on deck over the opened hatch or installing velcro material around the inside of the hatch and the screen material. all suggestions (and pics of previous installs) are appreciated.

thanks, Jerry

I made screens from noseeum screen, velcro, and webbing from Sailrite. The webbing color is same as headliner and width is same as velcro. I glued the velcro to the headliner with small screws at stress points. I sewed the other 1/2 velcro to the screen same time as sewing the webbing. See attached pictures.

Used a male snap with a screw back at the corners and half-way points on the cabin hatch. Sewed a hemmed edge so it would "pucker" when the snaps are snapped. The female snaps are in the screen. .. I don't have a good picture but it works very well at keeping bugs out. I don't like the way it blocks access to the hatch adjuster and latch, and the way it blocks so much airflow. I think an ideal screen would fit outside, over the hatch and have edges weighted so it stayed in place.. more area around the sides to get air through and easy access to the adjuster and latch. There is a commercial one available, but if you are handy with sewing, it would not be hard to make.

We took some old 5/8" nylon dock lines and cut them to fit around the outside of the hatches. Then cut out a chunk of Boy Scout bug netting that I had in the garage, and looped and sewed the edges around the nylon line to secure it. When it's buggy, toss it over the hatch, and if it rains, it's easy to close the hatch. The rope is heavy enough to keep the screen from blowing away.

Velcro

I think Velcro used on any hatch or window is easy to remove or remove part of it to get to hatch closing and locking when needed.
I added Ocean hatch shades and screen on my 2 main hatch's and peek a boo shades and new lewmar screens for side hatch's but my one rear birth that opens in bottom side in cockpit needs a new shade and screen that I will do as Mary did with Velcro.
