Now in support of Gary's quest, there are reasons to be able to lock the hatch boards to keep them from rising up in a storm. If not locking them at the least securing them so that water boarding the boat is kept out.
Keeping the crew safe while sitting in a dangerous harbor or a night passage in bad waters is another issue. Go on YouTube and there are numerous blogs of cruisers dealing with raiders (pirates

) in foreign waters. I think there was even an episode of the the infamous La Vagabond crew who had a boat pull up near it and the crew started throwing cans of food at the approaching boat.
Knowledge about events and regions of unrest may be our best defense as a cruising boat. Hiding our heads in the sand is just unwise.
