Forward Hatches 28.5
Initially at least in '85 and '86 the forward hatch was a 20"x20" (nominal) plastic hatch by Gray Marine. I believe Hunter upgraded to aluminum deck hatches in '87 but kept the Grey Marine port lights. I replaced my plastic hatches with Bomar low profile hatches from West Marine. Not having a catalog handy, I believe they were 20"x20" (nominal) and 10"x10" (Nominal). I used an orbital sander to slowly open out the edges of the mid-bay deck opening to 10"x10" for the main salon and it looks and fits great. The 20x 20 was a perfect drop in fit and was easy to install as Bob described.Since the screw holes for the plastic hatch were different for the Bomar, I filled the old holes with Marinetex and drilled pilot holes for the new screws. Put some newspapers down in the V berth to catch any sealant that drops thru; but put two liberal lines of sealant on the flanges of the hatch before you put it in place.
