Needing to find out what size/type of window to purchase for the front hatch for our 28.5. The opening measures 19.5 but can't seem to find one with that size opening. Advise, where to go would be appreciated. Thanks! Jim

Gray 900 series

The front window is a Gray995-2122 hatch. Minor repairs can be made if the hatch isn't completely destroyed. I screw strips of aluminum on the inside rim to strengthen the frame. All cracks were filled with west system epoxy and filler. I then sanded and painted the hatch using paint formulated for plastic from the local hardware store. Now, hatch is good as new.

How Hard to Replace Hatch?

Wow, I got on the forum to ask the exact question Jim had and here's this great info. My hatch is cracked in two places and the latching and lifting hardware is trashed and I'd just prefer to replace it. How hard is this to do? The hatch seems to be made by Bomar--not sure what the 'gray' refers to unless color. I've found one listing for it at: www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|6880|6881|320590&id=48184 [Edit:] Found it on West Marine and they use 'Gray' in product description but list opening measurement at 19 3/4" square. First link above says their product is white. Their illustration only shows one lifting arm and they are cheaper than WM. Thanks. Larry

Hatch Replacement

Well this is certainly a start. I want to replace the small hatch that is there now so that it's back to what it's supposed to be. Didn't know what I needed to buy, meaning what size to get and you're provided that. Hope it's not too hard to replace. Jim

Not very difficult ...

..to do. Simply use a knife to cut the calking between the hull and the hatch frame while pulling on the window frame itself. Eventually the frame will separate from the hull. Clean remaining calk from hull and you are ready to install new hatch. Use painter’s tape to mask the area around the frame – this will help cleaning up the calk that ooze later. Apply new calking then install new hatch. Screw the hatch fasteners down until just a little calking ooze out. Complete the installation on the second day by tightening the screws all the way.

Gray

gray refers to Gray Industries. They made the port lights and hatches on the earlier hunters.

Forward Hatches 28.5

Initially at least in '85 and '86 the forward hatch was a 20"x20" (nominal) plastic hatch by Gray Marine. I believe Hunter upgraded to aluminum deck hatches in '87 but kept the Grey Marine port lights. I replaced my plastic hatches with Bomar low profile hatches from West Marine. Not having a catalog handy, I believe they were 20"x20" (nominal) and 10"x10" (Nominal). I used an orbital sander to slowly open out the edges of the mid-bay deck opening to 10"x10" for the main salon and it looks and fits great. The 20x 20 was a perfect drop in fit and was easy to install as Bob described. Since the screw holes for the plastic hatch were different for the Bomar, I filled the old holes with Marinetex and drilled pilot holes for the new screws. Put some newspapers down in the V berth to catch any sealant that drops thru; but put two liberal lines of sealant on the flanges of the hatch before you put it in place.

Replaced with Bomar

I upgraded to a Bomar when the Gray hatch cracked when I had my 28.5. I had to enlarge the deck opening to 20x20 using a saw.
