Does anyone know what the companionway hatch boards were made of on a 2003 260? (obviously not the teak hatch boards) I broke one and would like to investigate my options for repair before I replace it.

Thanks,
Brad

Not much to go on without a picture but if they're clear, they're 1/2" acrylic as on a '99 H310. There are the nicest IMHO. If they're opaque plastic, they're 1/2" UHMW polyethylene (STARboard).

Maybe a 2003 H26 owner can supply some hard facts here.

They are a dark colored see through plastic. I guess I should have been more specific, there are plenty of different materials out there. LOL brain fart.

................. as they're either smoke or bronze acrylic. I'm saying they're 1/2" thick, same as our H310. If you've got the broken pieces, they can be used as a pattern. Otherwise you'll have to wing it.

If you've got a hobby woodworking shop, this stuff is a breeze to work with. If not, any plastic shop in your neck of the woods can fabricate the panel for you. However without doing it yourself, these fabricators can be a little pricey.

Kivali, there are some solvent welding techniques for acrylic and polycarbonate. A while back, googled the subject and got lots of info, but didn't actually try it. BrianW

Use AZEEK board. Its lighter, can be worked and comes in regular lumber widths. It bright white and can be painted.

As for those hatch covers, I tried several times to glue back with various glues but to no avail as a former and top dealer for the 260.

Working with plastics, you have to cut slowly or you will melt the material with a high speed jig saw or any other kind of saw. Also you will need to follow the angle of the edges as they are designed to deflect water.

If you want to attempt this yourself, I would look locally for scraps and if near the coast, I would look thru the scrap piles at marine repair yards as you will get a better deal for scarp vs. purchasing a complete 4' X 8' section which is costly. If the scrap material is scratched, you can wet sand out and to finish off, use a slow speed buffer no faster than 1000 rpm with any good fine compound and I use to use the 3M finesse It paste type but that only comes in a gallon can which can be expensive for a small job.

Brian and Ralph, thank you for your responses gentlemen. Brian and kermit, my mountain home will be finished by the end of September. Kermit and Brian, you and others will be welcomed to stay and be prepared to be wined and dined like my family at the farm for years did. The beginning of the James River in VA is literally in my back yard with superb mt. views.

hardy back

I replaced the hatch boards on my H25.5 with ones made from hardy Back siding. Not see through but very durable. I just painted them a color that matched the trim on the boat. Looked great.

Hi - I am also looking to rebuild my companionway covers. Can you provide more information on AZEEK board. Could not find it referenced. Where do you buy it?

Thanks
