As a survivor of Charley in '04 please check in with how you are doing? The forum has been very quiet about how you guys made out. Hope all is well. Let us know how you are as soon as you can.

It may be awhile. They are probably very busy about now. To all our Texan sailor friends: Be careful. A boat can be replaced. A life cannot. Godspeed to all.

Something I did notice, it looked like the sailboats were spaced out fairly well to prevent one boat failing on the next.
But that brings up a question. Since you know the boats are going to get knocked off the stands anyway, wouldn't one be better off to just set the boat on the ground, gently flopped over on their sides, that way they don't fall to the ground, because they are already placed down in a controlled manor.

If there is any "bright side" to such a disaster, we will learn how good the various boat insurance companies are. I had excellent service from BoatUS after Charley but they became just too expensive by hundreds of dollars. Will be interested to see how good everyones service is especially after Geico underwrote BoatUS.

At first it looked like you could just flop the trailer back upright and everything would be fine. Looking closer, it looks like the drop keep is partially extended. It will be interesting to see if there are stress cracks around the opening.

Unfortunately I don't think the port spreader is supposed to look like that either.

While walking through a boat yard in the Caribbean a few years back, came upon an interesting way of storing sailboats on the hard. A rectangular ditch was dug deep enough to lower the keel and rudder into. The hull rested on the ground and was shored up. Makes sense to me.

I saw a news report this morning. What looked to be a Hunter or Catalina in the 40+ ft range washed up onto a road or parking lot. My thoughts and prayers to all in Houston area and ..as someone noted...boats can be replaced...people can't.

Roland. That might work for wind but flooding and storm surge would likely just take advantage of boats sitting there in the ditch.

You are correct, sir. I hadn't fully thought that through. Thank you. :)

When Isabelle came through Annapolis, a live-aboard friend took all his valuables off the boat and put them in his car in the Liberty marina. Boat survived, but his car was flooded. I'm not sure why it did not float away?

Heartbroken for all the folks in the path of that storm. Just incredible but so glad that so many are pitching in to help. I have made 2 donations to the Red Cross so far. Keep them all in your thoughts as you go about your day. They have a long way to go towards any kind of normal day.
