I was looking for a bread that would last a long time. So I went back to the days when the boats were made of wood and the men were made of iron. Great in a stew, dunk them in tea or coffee to soften them up, I found that rum worked the best also made for a really happy crew.

I don't think the weevils were the only varmints sharing the hardtack back in the day!

I know its not authentic, but we always take along some Sailorboy pilot bread - pretty tasteless, but nothing could be easier. It doesn't have to be tasteless though - My grandmother used to make incredible hard tack, but I think she took the recipe to her grave.

We often take along Wasa. It is the size of graham crackers, but has almost "0" taste. That way it can be paired with cheese, wine, beer, or even iced tea! Actually, Wasa is a great source of fiber and is easy to eat, one hand food to nibble while at the helm if conditions allow a diversion like that. The thicker version of Wasa is better tasting in my opinion.

I'll have to agree with Douglast, nothing quite like the smell of chocolate chip cookies wafting up from the galley. My favorite though is fresh bread baking in the oven. Why eat hard tack when you can have fresh?

Where is Ross when you need him?
I found these recipes on the web for hardtack: http://kenanderson.net/hardtack/recipes.html
I'd think that substituting molasses or brown sugar for sugar would be more 'authentic'.
Hope your teeth are strong!
Thanks for the link, I used just flour salt and water, when the hardtack first comes out of the oven its more bread like and soft, but let them sit for an hour or two and you end up with the brick like quality they are famous for.

As a Civil War reenactor, I seriously just got the shivers. Hardtack will surely keep, but it's not something I want to eat on a regular basis. Of course, if you let it sit for a long time and grow a nice mold to it, you'll have a nice little bit of homemade penicillin. HOORAY!

Truth be told I only made hardtack once, it was after watching an old movie and I had to find out first hand.
Is there health benefits from eating this stuff?
Weevils for protien....
Mold for penicillin....
I am not sure, but I have never heard of anyone expiring from eating them.

There is an accompanying book written based on the Master & Commander Series. It purports to have authentic recipes from the time period that the series is set in. It makes for interesting reading as well as adventuresome cooking.

Definitely have to try some of the puddings....
