Ya wonder how the Brits ruled the world for all those years. The basic diet was dried meat, pork, until the live pigs ran out, pea soup and hard tack, no extra charge for weevils, with a daily ration of rum and lime juice thrown in for good measure. The Captain and officers didn't fair much better. What's interesting is that the crews didn't eat much fish, there being an entire ocean filled with it? Was aboard HMS British cruiser in Hong Kong in the '70's, (remember 'Nam?) The crew would get a "tot" of rum and a beer everyday. The seven guys I met, playing darts and drinking beer in a pub at nine in the morning, had a deal going. ONe day a week one of them would get his rum ration and everybodys beer. One ration of rum and seven beers and they'd throw their buddy in the rack to sleep it off. The rum supply was in a big keg and inscribed on it was, "The Queen, God Bless Her." That and the ubiqitous tea was the extent of their refreshment. Meanwhile aboard U.S. Navy ships we had Gedunk and Ice Cream. Fair Winds and Full Sails....

I too remember the British and Aussies having access to alcohol on board almost never happened on a USS vessel. I once got a rum ration after an extremly rough re-fueling session on the bow. Was nice to have a Brit or Aussie tied up outboard as on duty days when you couldn't go ashore you gould slip next door for a beer.
