Hard starting diesel.

I recently replaced an old 5411 Universal diesel with a factory new m3-20b Universal diesel. The new engine cranked almost as soon as I touched the button for the first time. During cleanup of the engine compartment I removed an old fuel pump the P O had installed inline between the water seperator and fuel filter. Now the engine takes forever to crank. I have completely bled the fuel lines including the injectors. I also cut off the raw water intake to prevent back filling the muffler. After I start the engine it will crank again and again with no problem.Let it sit overnight and I am back to the endless cranking. Any suggestions on what the trouble might be ?

Fuel tank vent clogged posibly

It's possible that your fuel tank vent line is clogged. What may be happening, is once the fuel begins to move or perhaps the tank heats up during the day creating pressure in the tank, the fuel will run just fine to the pump. However, during the night, the fuel cools off and as there is possibly a clogged vent in the tank, the fuel tank is creating a vacum which does not let fuel easily be pumped to the injector pump. May be tricky to ascertain this, but a relatively inexpensive repair.

Does the new engine call for an electric

booster pump like the old motor had? Vic "Seven" Naples

electric fuel pump

on the M25 universal desiel there is an electric fuel pump that pumps the fuel out of the tank and to the engine. When you removed this pump you probably eliminated a necessary item! I suggest you put the pump back and see what happens. You may need to get a new one (expensive) if you threw the old one away. dave

Dave - Bleed without the pump?

Dave - Sounds like a possibility, but could he bleed the lines without the electric pump? I bleed the lines on my Universal M25 by running the electric pump..... am I missing something about the process here? Michael O'

Elec. Fuel Pumps - Inexpensive Sources

Harvey Sounds like Dave is right. However, a new fuel pump doesn't have to be expensive. See the link. Stu
