halyards

Dear Ëllissitzky,

I apologize for not mentioning your name, but it did not find one.

I also have a Vega (V 1682) with the original Proctor mast. The halyards
are all outside the mast, inside the mast are only 12 volt wires for the
navigation lights and the antenna wire for the mariphone.
(maritime transmitter)..
Those wires run thru the ship and they might cause serious leaking. So
I made hole at the bottom of the mast and lead those wires outside the
mast. Thos 2 inch hole in the boat under the mast was closed.
There should be no trouble for you to install new halyards outside the
mast for your sails.
I hope your Vega has a roller jib.

Unfortunately, you are too far away to get my help.

If you need other directions , please let me know,
regards and in time happy sailing,

Henk Jansen

Please bear with my stupid questions as this is my first (and probably
last) boat. I found the bilge drain plug and learned of its
importance thanks to this group!

My 1971 Vega has the original Proctor mast. I can see I think four
sheaves at the top, plus blocks. I can't see any wire halyards. I
don't see any exit holes for the halyards near the bottom of the mast.
How (in detail) do I put in (rope) halyards before stepping the mast?

The boat is in New Bedford Mass. and stripping the paint is taking far
too long so there is plenty of time for these annoying matters.

Ellissitzky,

I don't know about your halyards, but I am sure any other sailor in the boat
yard would be happy to help you. However, I am in the middle of stripping
the bottom of my Albin Ballad (30ft model). I have removed all of the paint
and sanded all but the last 10% or so. Let me suggest that you try the
Dophinite brand paint remover. It is very effective even on multiple layers
of paint. You need to be patient, paint it on and let it sit. As you see
spots drying, repaint them. You need to do this for the first hour. Let
the material sit and soak. Then try a spot if it doesn't get right down to
the gelcoat with a push style scraper, put more on. With one other person I
have stripped the entire 30ft hull in two 6 hour days. Let me know if you
need more info. The stripper is sold at several stores but Boat US has the
best price.

Hello dear Vega owner;

My Vega also has the original Proctor mast. I own my Vega 26 years, and
I have
some 44.000 miles under my keel. I sail my boat about 90% of the time
singlehanded- I had many chances to get another boat, but "no way" would
I part with this boat!

My running rigging is wire/rope, only the spinnaker halyard being rope
only. All
halyards are outside. Inside the mast is only the wiring for UHF-radio and
the running light. I do not carry the halyards via blocks to the
cockpit- the winches
and cleets are on the mast. The simpler- the better! (and safer)

Ellissitzky,
First let me say I am not stripping the topside.... The product I used was
a purple jelly like substance. I don\'t know if it is paste or a liquid,
sort of a cross between them. I will be able to look at the container
tonight if that will help. I used about 21/2 gallons and stripped off 5-8
layers of paint and the barrier coat. Definitely get the push type scraper
and several packages of blades. You need to change them frequently. I am
also using an orbital sander with a vacuums. I was able to sand ½ of the
entire boat in 5 hours on Saturday. Sunday did not go as well but I will
finish up completely tonight.

Good Luck

By the way I am doing this in Swansea, not far from where you are.

Hi

Original halyards are rope and wire spliced. The wire can wear the sheaves at teh top of the mast. We tend to change the halyards for 10mm Braid on Braid pre-stretched polyester. A complete kit of running rigging should cost about £130 including softeye splices etc.

Kind Regards

I use 3/8 inch Sta-Set X (low stretch) for main and jib halyards. Stretchier and cheaper line is fine for spinnaker halyard. You could go smaller (5/16) but 3/8 is easier on the hands. Get rid of the wire, but the original sheaves work just fine. Bill Bach, V 1071
