Had KBW20 tranny rebuilt on a Hunter 42 Passage and now Fwd is reverse and Rev is forward

Just had my Kanzaki KBW20 tranny rebuilt. Shift lever is facing towards the stern of the boat with the Edson cable running to the same mounting bracket on the SB stern of the engine to the clevis pin connecting the cable to the shift lever on the tranny!
Push the shifter control forward to engage FWD, the cable is pulled upward which pulls the tranny shift lever up into gear. However, that is Reverse on the transmission shift diagram on the side of the tranny. The prop shaft rotates counter clockwise. It has worked the opposite for the past 5 years!!
if you rotate the shifter lever 180 degrees the pull of pushing the shift control forward pull the shifter up into forward. But, the routes at a bad angle and binds if using the original cable mounting bracket. A web search has several recording the same issue with no solution as to how to resolve of explain!
Any thoughts from the community would be appreciated!

sounds like someone reversed the cable sides on a turning sprocket or omitted it. Should be an easy fix.

Do you have a single lever control for the engine or separate throttle and gear shift? Were the cables replaced?

If you have a single lever control and the cable was replaced, it is possible the cable was installed incorrectly on the shifter. The transmission cable connection on the single lever control attaches to one of 2 wings on the mechanism. If the cable was connected to the wrong wing, shifting will be backwards. Moving the cable to the other wing will solve the problem.

The page below is from an installation manual for a single lever control.

I’m using Edson standard throttle/shifter controls. Cables attach at the rear of the shifter lever which pulls the cable when shifter if pushed forward for FWD. that pull the transmission shift lever up which engages reverse. Prior to the rebuild it would engage the transmission in Forward.

Let me see if we get this right.... When the shift lever (on the transmission) moves to forwards, the boat goes forwards, but the lever at the helm is in reverse? And previously this did not happen?

Since you have Edson controls, forwards will always pull on the cable, and the way the shifter arm on the tranny is positioned that will put you in reverse gear ..... I suspect the shifter arm on the tranny was previously reversed (rotated about 180 degrees), so that pulling UP on the tranny shifter engages forwards.

Do you have before and after photos of the tranny? Maybe the surveyor had one?

That would be strange setup, as many Kanzaki transmissions have this note (never mind the frequent spelling mistakes).

Assuming you have an Edson DUAL CONTROLS pedestal, was your boat originally fitted with a Yanmar or perhaps did it have a different engine from the factory?

Is this your helm controls setup?

Here are 2 different KBW20s with the shift lever on opposite sides...

A little more details, background and photos would be helpful to assist....

Without any more info, I suspect that when Hunter fitted the engine, they rotated the transmission's shift lever to make it compatible with the Edson 2 lever controls.

As a tip.... I ALWAYS take lots of photos whenever I disassemble stuff..... I can't trust that I'll remember 1-2 months how it was put together :)

For transmissions with the shift arm on the starboard side, turning the shift arm counter-clockwise will put it in forward (the prop will turn clockwise). Rotating the arm clockwise will put the transmission in reverse (the prop will turn counter-clockwise).

Since you have the Edson system, the problem is the orientation of the shift arm on the transmission.

So, flip the lever on the tranny (up or down depending on where it is fitted now). That should change the “throw “ of the lever to the opposite engagement of the transmission.
