Has anyone had problems with seawater coming back up the cockpit drain hoses on a h37 cutter in heavy seas?

Yup

Water used to come in all the time. I reversed the hoses. Stbd scupper to port hose and vice versa. Water hardly ever comes in now. That's the way it was supposed to be according to the Hunter diagram I have, but that's not the way it was on my boat. I replaced the corrugated hose with thick-wall sanitation hose as well, and double clamped because of proximity to the waterline. Mine is a 1979. Capt Walt

Also over hull speed on our '77 h27

But I see a little water coming in as a symptom of great sailing. (Over hull speed, the wake builds up against the transom. Actually that's what hull speed means.) David Lady Lillie

worse worse motor

I find it is bad if I'm motoring, very bad on one tack if I'm motor sailing. The exhaust drives it up the drain. The exhaust points backwards, the drain angles forward. I'm not sure who designed this disaster, but sometime in the future I plan to re-route the exhaust out the transom.

Reroute?

Interesting Walt because my 1979 does have them crossed. Still original and one does leak, the bottom of the hose or the thru-hull. Can we call the fiberglass "pipe" a thru-hull? Gene, I know you built much larger scuppers. Did you not the change the "thru-hulls"? Should we reroute these, maybe out the transom? Should we be installing seacocks? Poor diagram in link below.

Cut Mine Out...

I had the same problem Gene had, mine were not crossed and water would build up in the cockpit when near hull speed but the F/G exit tubes at the hull were also cracked and water would leak in around those seams at the hull at any speed over an idle into the bilge. I cut them out at the hull, ground them flush and installed 1 1/2" bronze through hulls. I used sanitation hose double clamped at the hull fitting and enlarged the scuppers in the cockpit to match. I did not feel a need for any valves in this configuration and my problem has been solved!

H25 has same problem as 27

Interestingly enough, my 1979 H25 has the same problem as David's H27. That is the trouble with a center drain located in the aft end of the cockpit.

rerouting

I originally planned to re-do the through hull part. Mine were just fiberglass tubes stuck into the hull as I expect all were. I made new tubes of fiberglass and had every intention of installing them. When it came time for us to leave in '99 that was one of the things that was not done. I considered the things I had left to do, including the cockpit drain exits, the bent rudder and more, and asked myself: "Will any those things keep us from making it on our trip? Do we want to work on this thing forever?" The answer to both was no, so we said to heck with it, we're going. We took off and cruised another 5000 miles. Those things are still not done as I type this. I guess I got lazy! Somewhere along the way of that 5000 mile trip I realized that the exhaust was causing the majority of the water in the cockpit and decided that I'd attack that instead. Someday I will. I think Tom's fix of putting real through hulls in might be just as good a fix, and I may just try that first, as it's easier. The way the factory installed them, they face forward and become a scoop in the water, and the through hull may just change the angle enough that it is no longer a problem. Ed, I did change the cockpit end, and what I did was install 1 1/2" through hulls where those tiny drains used to be. I screwed right angle fittings on the bottom of those and ran them toward the back. I did, however, still leave the crossed, as I could not run them to the original outputs with the angle they had if the hoses went straight. I did solve two problems. The cockpit drains about 4 times as fast, and the hoses no longer accumulate crud and stop up as they did when they made the low down path they originally took. Now I only have the problem we are discussing.
