There appear to be spare turning block possibilities at the port mast base and spare "tunnels" port side. Are there hardpoints to mount winch, clutches and organizer?

Hi again Patrick!

To restate again, I own a 1989 30(G?). The mast has two sets of base exit blocks. Starboard is for Main and Jib halyards, and port is for spinaker halyard and pole topping lift. Also, my boat is set up with mirror image deck organizers, stoppers/clutch(x3), and winches on the cabin top. The port side third stopper is for the pole downhaul and the starboard one is for a single line reefing system. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with and good luck with the survey. Not to sound condescending, but if you have never been present at the survey, I know the one I attended when buying my Hunter was a great experience. The surveyor give you a different perspective into the boat and being present gives you the piece of mind that the surveyor did a through job for his money. Between the two of you, if you subsequently decide to buy, you should have a pretty through understanding of what condition the boat is in and what you may have to attend or, at least, keep an eye on. Good luck.

Cabin top Winches

Most Hunter's have aluminum backing plates under high load points such as the cabintop winch. If you are adding a port side winch , marking its location and drilling smaller 'pilot' holes should verify the presence and thickness of the backing plate. Then get the right drill and tap size for the fasteners you need. However, if you are upgrading the starboard winch to a larger size or to a self tailer, you may find you won't be able to use the same bolt holes. I was able just to rotate the new starboard self tailing winch to 'miss' all the existing holes and get into the aluminum backing plate on my 28.5. I then plugged all existing holes with scotch tape at the bottom and filled them with Marinetex. Be sure to consider any future doger location when installing cabintop winches, and you may even try to get a straight shot from the cabintop winches to snatch blocks on the toerail for possible spinnaker sheets (J-24"s do it).

Factory says yes

I had the same question a couple of years ago, and called Hunter. They said yes, the starboard side backing plates are mirrored on the Port side. The 1991 H30 came stock with the port side winch, clutches and organizer. I haven't upgraded yet, so haven't drilled to know for sure. Call or e-mail Hunter if in doubt.

mounting port side hardware

I added a port side winch and sheet stoppers on the 1992 Hunter 33.5 that I own. There is a 1/4" aluminum backing plate glassed into the cabin top 9installed when the boat was built) which can be drilled and tapped to receive the sheet stopper (I used one from Garhauer Marine). I added a Harken #16 self-tailing whinch be drilling through the cabin top and through bolting with 5 1/4 x 20 bolts (be sure to backup with generous sized washers. I now lead two reefing lines for the main, main, jib and spinnaker halyards, the mainsheet and a boom vang to sheet stoppers and winches on the port and starboard side of the cabintop. This clean up the (former) clutter of lines at the base of the mast, and makes sail adjustments much easier.

Yes, my boat has 'em

My 1989 30g is equipped with a Lewmar self-tailing winch mounted on the port cabin top, just forward of the companionway. In the head (underneath), there is a rectangular access port; this port, covered with a piece of laminate, provides access to the bolts that are used to attach the winch. The Hunter 30G is designed so that ALL lines can be led aft; however, it seems that few owners (or dealers) have taken advantage of this. It's easy, and you'll like the results.
