Hi all. I'm trying to lower my rudder with less effort, and wanted to put in 2 micro blocks for a 4:1 purchase. (as per George's modification) Well, looking in my hollow rudder post I have a block about half way down, blocking most of the inside of the post. It appears to be attached to the 1/2" diameter bolt which goes thru the centre of the rudder post and the collar of my Edson wheel steering.

Anywho, I've tried to remove this stainless steel bolt so I can remove the block & clear out the rudder post. The nut and washer came off no problem. BUT the bolt is seized on. It won't turn, or slide out. I don't think there's a collar around it inside the post. I'm afraid to bust the head off, then what do I do. I've tried to punch it out from the forward transom end back, but it's hard to get at and hit it out with any power. I also don't want to crack the wheel steering collar that the seized bolt goes thru.$$$ In the attached picture you can just see the head of the bolt that goes thru the rudder post and the grey steering collar seen running into the hole of the transom.

I've let it soak with liquid wrench for the past 12 hours, still no budge.

Anybody have any other ideas on how to remove a seized bolt without wrecking the rudder post or steering collar? And Plan B, if I do twist the head off, and I probably will, how do you remove a broken seized bolt.

PS> It sounded so easy on the modifications site, just replace a 2:1 purchase with a 4:1 purchase using Harken micro blocks. Nobody said how to remove the old block inside the rudder post. Whew, I just want to sail.

Wait: Don't remove the bolt! Look Again!

Unless the PO did some magic, the block is not attached to the bolt it is attached to the line that attaches to the top of the rudder. You need to remove the rudder line that attaches to the rudder. Remove the bolt on the top of the tube and pull out the block and line. The block is is not attached to anything but the lines that drop through the tube.

Note: the head of my rudder looks slightly different than yours because I've modified it so it is easy to swap rudders. I always carry a spare.

I did George's mod on my 260 w/wheel with the 4:1 and it works fine without removing the bolt. The lower block does not pass the bolt. Also installed qwick release cleat for the rudder line so rudder will kick up if I hit anything.

Thank You

George,
I got up this beautifull Sunday morning, after a good sleep and thought, okay, I'll tackle this problem again. FORTUNATELY I read your reply and thought :laugh:okay lets rethink. I had all the lines removed from the rudder post earlier except the bottom one. I had tried but no matter how hard I pulled it would not come out, sooo I assumed the block was attached to this bolt.:bang:
Then after your insistance I figured why would the PO do that. I used a coat hanger and tried pulling the rope out of the top of the rudder post. I got it but it wouldn't come out the top. Then I kept my cool and hooked onto the block and voila, out it came, block and rope. It had just been twisted & jammed.
Whew, was that a good feeling. You saved me big bucks and grief because I know I would have busted the bolt, and really been pis#$d off finding out it wasn't necessary.
Thank you again, now I'll try installing your mod with the two micro blocks, I already switched to Spinlocks for the main & jib. Hope to meet some day whenever I head'er east to the North channel.

PS. I'm going to also put on the quick release, justed started drilling the stainless steel top rudder bracket. After breaking 3 drill bits I have to get something stronger. Heard cobalt or carbide might do it.

Glad you got it figured out. One comment tho; the idea for virtually all the modifications on my boat (except for a few) came from other H26/260 owners who contribute to this forum. Thanks to Phil and all the other sailors who are willing to share...

P.S. Had my first sail of the season on Grand Traverse Bay today, winds 12-15 and 1 ft waves, I was in heaven...Gosh I love this boat...
