Hi all. I'm trying to lower my rudder with less effort, and wanted to put in 2 micro blocks for a 4:1 purchase. (as per George's modification) Well, looking in my hollow rudder post I have a block about half way down, blocking most of the inside of the post. It appears to be attached to the 1/2" diameter bolt which goes thru the centre of the rudder post and the collar of my Edson wheel steering.
Anywho, I've tried to remove this stainless steel bolt so I can remove the block & clear out the rudder post. The nut and washer came off no problem. BUT the bolt is seized on. It won't turn, or slide out. I don't think there's a collar around it inside the post. I'm afraid to bust the head off, then what do I do.
I've tried to punch it out from the forward transom end back, but it's hard to get at and hit it out with any power. I also don't want to crack the wheel steering collar that the seized bolt goes thru.$$$ In the attached picture you can just see the head of the bolt that goes thru the rudder post and the grey steering collar seen running into the hole of the transom.
I've let it soak with liquid wrench for the past 12 hours, still no budge.
Anybody have any other ideas on how to remove a seized bolt without wrecking the rudder post or steering collar? And Plan B, if I do twist the head off, and I probably will, how do you remove a broken seized bolt.
PS> It sounded so easy on the modifications site, just replace a 2:1 purchase with a 4:1 purchase using Harken micro blocks. Nobody said how to remove the old block inside the rudder post. Whew, I just want to sail.:cry:
