H260 In-Boom Friction Locks

Just wondering what is the trick to using those three friction locks built into the front of the boom on the H260? The ones that lock down the outhaul, reef line and topping lift line. I can tention these lines from the cockpit, but they won't lock down from there. I end up scrambling up to the goose neck and flipping them forward to lock them. Either that's the way they are supposed to work or I am doing something wrong, hope its the latter?

Thanks

Yeah... I hate those things.

My topping lift terminates at the aft end of the boom with a block and a jam cleat, but I put up with the gooseneck ones for the reefing line. For the outhaul, I ran the line straight down to the base of the mast and put a block and cam cleat there and I just drape the line over the companionway cover and let it hang down into the cockpit or into the salon. I went from never using my outhaul to adjusting it all day everyday.

They SUCK

I’m thinking of putting clam cleats on my boom

That’s the way they are designed. If you run your lines back to the cockpit, you need to install additional cam locks there. The only good thing is that the boom locks stay open and don’t interfere with the lines then.

Schaefer makes a curved base cheek block that basically is a turning block with curved base. Put a knot in the friction lock end for the topping lift and reef line. Then run both one on each side of the boom to the turning block affixed as far aft on boom to a doers cleat or cam cleat.
