can anyone give me the towing weight of the H26. including the trailor and outboard (honda 9.9). What I am trying to find out is can a Ford F150 with the small 302 engine pull the rig in a satisfactory way.

Rig Weight

I think the boat weighs about 3000 lbs, and the trailer about 1500 lbs. Figure on pulling 5000 lbs and use a vehicle which will handle it. I tow my H26 with a S10 Blazer. A 302 engine should be big enough. but you might consider putting a transmission cooler on as cheap insurance for the auto tranmission. Ron

I have no problem

Chris, I have a '93 F150 with the 5.0 engine and have no problems pulling boat. I do turn off the electronic o/d in hilly country though. After reading other posts regarding the issue of towing with the outboard mounted I have decided that for any long distance towing I'm going to take the motor off and put it in the truck bed. Good luck, Jim Covey s/v Wampeter

weight

The boat dry weight is 3000 and the trailer and equipment another 1500-1700. kTherefore you are pulling anywhere between 4500-4700 pounds. It sounds that you have a small v-8 in the engine and if so that will do the job. Just remember that you will not accelerate fast and give extra braking distance although you have brakes on the trailer. Carry a broom to sweep the rock and dirt off the ramp since you are in a truck particualy if it is not a 4x4. You may want to conmsider carrying 4 100 pounds of sand in the bed above the wheels

Weight up Front

Any weight removed from the transom and put in the tow vehicle yields a multiple return. I put both the OB and the rudder from my H23.5 in the bed of the pickup. This relieves some weight on the trailer and also transfers more weight to the tongue. I don't have trailer brakes so it's very important. Hauling bags of sand might help traction but will certainly hurt acceleration and braking. Any speeds above 60 mph seem to take a terrible toll on fuel economy too. If you don't have oil pressure and temperature guages, they would be a good investment before any long hauls. Ken S/V Wouff Hong

weighed mine

Two years ago I weighed my H26 after a 10 day trip to the San Juan Islands from Idaho. I left a few gallons of water and fuel in the tanks along with the food, cooking gear, cruising gear, etc. associated with a week on the water. The total weight was 5150 lbs. including boat, motor, trailer etc.

More than you think

When we took our H26 home for the Winter last year, I hit the scales and logged just under 6000 pounds (were cruisers, not racers – and yes, I drained the water ballast). This summer, on the way to British Columbia, just under 7000 pounds. I have a Dodge Ram to pull it with. When we purchased the boat, I attempted to pull it with my Ford Aerostar – and burned up the transmission on the way home from the dealer (probably 4000 to 4500 pounds). So, my bet is, the transmission of any vehicle is the weak point. And a transmission cooler is a must.

V8 4.0 litre ok

I tow my '99 260 with a Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0 litre V8 with no problem. Definitely get an oil cooler and a beefed-up class III hitch. A weight distributing hitch is the way to go as it throws much of the weight forward.

Towing

Towed a Hunter 25, approximate weight 5500 pounds, with '91 Chev Astrovan 3.0 liter engine. I installed a weight distribution hitch which is a must if for no other reason than safety. I was able to go 50-55 mph without difficulty although I had to watch the temperature guage to insure it didn't overheat. I only tow it twice a year so the small van is not too inconvenient. Van has 150,000 miles on it.
