H19 (1994) Standing Rigging - Mast Foot Not Level

I recently replaced turnbuckle ends on the side wires but not the forestay. Anyone who has raised the mast without being careful has probably bent a few of those turnbuckle ends accidentally. Whoops...

Now, even with the forestay as short as possible, my mast foot does not set flush with the mast support (See picture). I followed the procedure in the H19 manual for setting mast rake/tension. I've tightened/loosened/re-tightened several times but was unable to ever get the foot to fully seat.

With the boat level, I could also not get the wrench hanging from the main halyard any closer than 12" from the rear of the mast. Per procedure, it is supposed to be roughly 6" aft of mast at the boom.

I took it out on a lower wind day and with mainsail only did not see movement or loosening, but the boom seemed low in the cockpit and sail was "loose".

My question is whether or not this mast position is normal. If not, do I need a new forestay? All new standing rigging?

Thanks!

That does look like excessive mast rack. It sounds like the new turnbuckles are shorter. I had a similar issue with mine. I added some toggles to the shrouds to give me a little more length.

If your rigging is serviceable you could also get the forestay shortened instead of replacing.

Thats way too much mast rake. So if I understand correctly, you replaced the side stay turnbuckles, but not the stays themselves, and now they appear too short. Since you did not replace the cable wire, that must mean you replaced just the threaded end. Is that correct? If so, when you compare the length of the new and old part, how are they different? Must be shorter. I always look for parts like that at the Parts Store on this website. I replaced the forestay and upper side stay on my 23.5 with cable from the store here and they ship fast and it was a perfect fit. I would definitely get that fixed.

Also, what is the history with the mast? Was it standing normally before you replaced the part? Or is this the first time you raised the mast and this is what you see?

Hi All,

Thanks for your responses and questions.

Yes. I ordered them from the Hunter owner store associated with this website.

I sailed it without adjustment from the previous owner and only addressed the bent turnbuckles this year. It seemed to be pretty normal, but honestly I didn't pay much attention.

@Crazy Dave Condon I'll check my PM. I don't see anything.

Level was determined with the boat sitting on the trailer:
Fore-Aft: I used a digital protractor on the interior mast support and adjusted the trailer tongue until it measured 3 degrees from vertical. See attached pdf.
Side-Side: Bubble level on the rear transom.

I am able to get the mast foot fully seated if I use the mainsheet/pole to pull it down with the side shrouds loose. So I think the side shrouds are the correct length. I doubt that any of the rigging has been replaced but I don't know for sure. I don't know why the forestay would need to be shortened, but that's sort of the direction I'm leaning right now.

Could not open. Four pictures needed
1. Pictures of port and starboard chainplate
Shroud turnbuckles.
2. Picture showing mast from front front of
Boat
3. Side view of mast from either side of
Mast

Please confirm which boat. 19 waterballast or 23.5 waterballast.

I was also involved with the water ballast 19 too.

Spoke with the owner today regarding his Hunter waterballast 19. He is proceeding to store the boat now and plans to get back in touch with me in the spring.

I suspect the masthead was not centered. Further, I suspect he did not have enough prebend. In addition I have seen the mast foot up some in front. Later
