I would like to remove the head bulkhead to refinish on both sides or replace. Am I correct in assuming that this is not a load bearing wall? Do I need to replace the flex gasket between the wall and the ceiling?

Correct, not load-bearing..The compression post takes the load there.. but you may have to jack the top cross beam slightly to get the bulkhead out. I don't think the bulkhead can fit through the companionway door so it and the new one will have to be two pieces. The flex gasket keeps the bulkhead from squeaking when the boat flexes and it keeps errant shower blasts from running down the aft side of the bulkhead..

There are a lot of screws that are hard to reach inside the sliders on both sides and the bulkhead is fiberglassed to the hull in various spots (tabbed). Its a hard job.

Indeed a hard job as Allan stated ! Besides the glass tabs you also find you might have to tear off the shelving on the wall behind the head in order to reach the screws inside. And the holding tank hoses (pump out and vent) as well as shower sump hose are nested very close to the starboard side of that bulkhead. I revarnished the cabin side without problems. I did not need to do the head side as it was in good shape, but I did take off a lot of the screws when doing the compression post. Good luck

Slight hijacking - has anyone removed the starboard panel on the engine compartment? I have a fuel leak and seems like removal of that panel would give location and repair access. Just wondering if I have to remove the whole cover or if I can just remove the side panel.

I suggest you start a new thread if you are looking for lots of replies. In the meantime, here is what I did. I did not remove it completely. I went at it from the rear cabin and removed enough to create a large access port enabling me to work around the fuel tank fairly easily. I built it so it can be taken off again if needed. I covered it with sheets of counter top formica that I had and hid the joints with small teak strips (not seen on pictures)

It is very awkward to work there. I corrected some fuel leaks by working a wrench from above and from the side access panel at the same time. I plan to increase the size of the access port and increase the amount of insulation on that bulkhead.
