Finding a home for used sails frequently isn't easy.
My story: Several years ago, needing some inexpensive sail cloth for a DIY sail modification project, I stopped by our local North or Hood (can't remember which) loft and asked if they might have an abandoned sail which they could sell me. People sometimes leave their previous sails with the loft when they order new ones. For $10, I left with a sail that was nicely rolled up (not folded or stuffed) in one of those long sail covers. Unrolling it out on my garage floor, the mainsail was virtually new. The cloth had all of its original new crisp. Still new cloth white. No yellowing or stains. The brass and stainless steel fittings were shiny. Seemed almost criminal to cut it up into pieces. Looking up the sail's logo, the sail was for a Knarr. Here's the link for the San Francisco Knarr association website >>
http://www.knarr.us/ . I contacted the fleet's admiral by email. I wrote that I just couldn't bring myself to cutting up such a fine sail. And might he ask around the Knarr fleet to see if anybody was interested to have it. If not for racing, then to use for the recreational sail. My price = $0. (Although a six pack in exchange wouldn't be turned down.) The fleet admiral did respond to me. Said he would let me know. I followed up with a second reminder. The sail is still in my garage.
