Great Pelican Sails

I was clearing out my uncle's attic and came upon what appears to be a virtually new set of sails and sail cover for a Great Pelican sailboat. The sails have been made by Norwester Sails. I recall that he started building such a boat but never finished it so I suspect that the sails have never been used.

Can anyone offer any suggestions on how to best go about selling these and what value to put on them? I live in Ontario, Canada.

My dad had an old Pelican...he eventually parted it out. I have an old pelican sail in my shed and I use the cloth for patches. I believe there is still an active racing association on the West Coast someplace.

I know there is still a Yahoo group. Try joining that.

and I've read a few articles on the Wooden Boat forum regarding pelican sailing associations. Search that forum as well.

Good luck.

I've tried sending a note to the Yahoo forum administrator several weeks back. No response yet!

Finding a home for used sails frequently isn't easy.

My story: Several years ago, needing some inexpensive sail cloth for a DIY sail modification project, I stopped by our local North or Hood (can't remember which) loft and asked if they might have an abandoned sail which they could sell me. People sometimes leave their previous sails with the loft when they order new ones. For $10, I left with a sail that was nicely rolled up (not folded or stuffed) in one of those long sail covers. Unrolling it out on my garage floor, the mainsail was virtually new. The cloth had all of its original new crisp. Still new cloth white. No yellowing or stains. The brass and stainless steel fittings were shiny. Seemed almost criminal to cut it up into pieces. Looking up the sail's logo, the sail was for a Knarr. Here's the link for the San Francisco Knarr association website >> http://www.knarr.us/ . I contacted the fleet's admiral by email. I wrote that I just couldn't bring myself to cutting up such a fine sail. And might he ask around the Knarr fleet to see if anybody was interested to have it. If not for racing, then to use for the recreational sail. My price = $0. (Although a six pack in exchange wouldn't be turned down.) The fleet admiral did respond to me. Said he would let me know. I followed up with a second reminder. The sail is still in my garage.

Fortunately for me but unfortunately for you they have been sold. I'm not exactly sure how we got connected but I responded to an advertisement for someone selling a Great Pelican. I told the seller that I was not interested in the boat but figured that he may be connected to other GP sailors and asked that he get the word out that I had a fine set of sails and pointed him to my Canadian Kijiji advertisement. Within a few weeks I found a buyer in the Seattle area and shipped him the sails. I'm sure there is a happy sailor out there somewhere, I think that he got a great deal.
