Just checking: Should I use the "standard grease" of the marine grease to lube the lower unit on my Mariner 9.9?

The lingo on the marine grease talks all about trailer bearings and such but it doesn't mention motors.

PS My motor is a Mariner 9.9 1994 Model. Anyone ever seen a manual for one of these?

Ditto...do not confuse lower unit gear oil (what you need) with wheel bearing grease! Bad things would happen.

Just because it would be such a serious mistake to do otherwise, use ONLY lower unit gear oil. DO NOT use grease. If you have an Academy Sports store near you, it usually has a good selection of marine supplies.

Are you referring to greasing the fittings on the lower unit and not changing the gear oil?

There is a friendly, helpful guy in Dana Pt, Ca who is pretty knowledgeable about old and new motors. Give him a call. He had an old Mariner advertised in Craigslist, although I don;t see it there now. His number is at the bottom of the ad. His name is Rich.

He suggested, to me, to try Lime Wire this is where he finds most of his old manuals.

Just realized from Rbone's post, John. What are you referring to as the "lower unit"?

I am reffering to the zerk fitting. The one I hook a grease gun to. Sorry I'm just learning.

Ok, now I'm confused.....where exactly on the motor is this zerks fitting? Most lower units are serviced via a fill and grain plug.

Good that you clarified, Alex! Anything with a Zerk fitting should be greased with A good marine grease, trailer wheel bearing grease is probably OK a good lithium base would be mighty fine.. The lower unit, the gear housing at the propeller, is the part that uses the 90 marine gear oil stuff.. sorry for the confusion..

Ah yes, a picture is worth a thousands words sometimes. Since that part isn't what's normally referred to as the "lower unit", please disregard my first post, grab a grease gun (I use lithium but use whatever than manual says) and have at it.

Just for your future reference, John, your lower unit is the bottom part of the motor drive shaft housing (vertical), from around the cavitation plates (the horizontal flat bits just above the propeller) down to the bottom. If you look at your motor, there's likely a few bolts holding that bottom part on to the drive shaft housing. That whole bottom piece can be taken off if it needs servicing. That's your lower unit.

there's usually three Zerk fittings on the "leg" of an outboard: One at the tilt-up pivot, and two at the upper and lower turning pivots. Grease them until some shows at the joint then wipe up any excess.

Mercury's "Quicksilver" line of greases are very good. Not a bad idea to have a tube of each of their marine greases on board.
