grease for the propeller and Combi

Hi,

What kind of grease do you use for the propeller (Combi)
and for the Combi itself ?

Last year, after replacing Combi propeller blades
(they got broken),
I could fill rather strong resistance,
when I was moving the lever in the cockpit
from maximum backwards (the "sailing" position)
to forward. I was then pulling the lever a bit back
and again forward, and then it was fine.
There was no similar effect in the other direction,
i.e. moving the lever from "forward" to "back"
and then to "sailing".

It was a rather "soft" blocking effect,
I mean the resistance was gradually increasing,
not just stopping in one place.

My suspicion is that the grease in the propeller
was too "dense" and/or I managed to pump
too much of it into the propeller boss.
Does this hyphothesis makes sense ?

I used this grease, both for the propeller and the Combi itself:

I once greased the hub and felt the same resistance at the lever; I think
I had overfilled. I removed the plug, moved the lever a few times and
grease came out of the hole. Lever action was easier after.

Hey Marcin -- too much grease will cause stiffness in the shifting --simple solution -- open the grease plug and shift a few times to remove some grease - but not too much - should work better. t (v2915)

Good luck with the combi Marcin, I did mine last year and my back is still sore! :)
I don't want to be too gloomy and negative but.........

Be very careful regarding the sizes of control tube and the various bearings and seals. I mismatched my bearings and tube at first (metric / imperial size conversion mixup). I found it a very tricky process to put it all back together and I consider myself a competent engineer / mechanic. The system is really quite clever and I was keen to get it working but frankly it was a mistake. It gave me all sorts of problems and was a major factor in my falling out with the boat! I did eventually get it all to work fine (after about 2000 miles!) but I was unable to cure an oil leak from the back of the combi unit despite fitting all new seals. I think I may have had an alignment problem..... never did really work out what was wrong!
If I were to do it again I would remove the combi / Volvo set up and fit a new engine etc from Steve Birch.
I hope it all works out better for you... best of luck.

John

Hey Marv - do you have any pics of the combi gearbox and guts? Thanks, Trev (V2915 - Mystic Rose)

Hello,
I need everything to reinstall from the trans to the prop. Someone pulled the motor, shaft, seals, bears, and prop and hung an out board on the boat. Where can I order all the parts needed to pull her back together again? Please advise.
Thanks ,
Larry
