  • I Plan on making my boat bigger by loosing some weight and making me smaller.
  • Finish some restoration projects.
  • Spend more nights away from the slip.

2017 was a bad year for sailing on STARGAZER. Family issues kept us at our dock. My New Year's Resolution is to not let the same "issues" prevent me from my passion - which is sailing my beautiful boat!

2016 was a very hectic year in my business. I had to skip sailing trips and events way too many times. I resolve to get out on the STARGAZER more often in 2017. And maybe even go somewhere in her.

2016 was my year for boat upgrades and repairs. The only thing left for 2017 is to replace the compressor and condenser (ie refrigerator). I then resolve to spend a lot of time just enjoying the boat!!! The best laid plans of mice and men.........

Thanks Gene. That is why my boating buddy gave it up on his smaller boat. Had not used it for years for that reason. It comes with a heat shield.
You are missing a part, the Alladin has a ceramic fabric mantle not unlike the Coleman lantern that turns that wick flame into a bright light. Absolutely essential that you use the proper fuel, standard kerosene is not pure enough. And they put out a ton of heat, easily enough to keep the saloon warm.

I plan to finally troubleshoot my wind instruments and reseal some deck hardware. Not too exciting but it should be worthwhile. Other than that, sailing with friends and family. Also possibly a trip to New Zealand, a trip to Malawi, some hiking, fishing, backpacking, and fly fishing. HEY, I'm running out of time already and it's only January.

Thanks for the tip. Lantern came with a new mantel and almost new wick. Will Class III fuel work or does it have to be 1-K kerosene? Any CO2 worries?

If you use Aladdin lamp oil the lamp burns cleaner, the wick and mantle last much longer and there is a much reduced kerosene odor in the exhaust. Never use the kero used for heaters, false economy.

JACK, I'M NOT GOING TO SAY YOU'RE WRONG, BUT I DON'T THINK YOU ARE RIGHT. MY CLUB CHARTERS TWICE A YEAR, AND THE SKIPPERs-TO-BE GET THEIR TICKET IN THE STATES FROM VARIOUS SOUURCES.
I know what you are saying. In Turkey and Croatia, it's almost impossible to charter without an ICC. In Greece, they signed UN resolution #40 so is IS the law, but you find very spotty enforcement. You have to remember that you get your charter license from the harbor POLICE, who are real cops. If the charter guys knows the locals will issue the charter licences without an ICC, you are indeed golden.

I might have scored a ride in Wed. nights races. Gonna crank up my learning curve this summer.

I resolve to join in some races this year, we purchased the boat in September last year and sailed her some 500 Nm's home and never got back out on her once she was in her home port. So 2017 I am excited to learn about racing sail boats in the cruising class, we will see how well we will do.

Traverse city is a beautiful place to be especially in the summer months a mecca of golf and boating, you may need a bigger check book to live there though that is for sure, Petoski municipal maria is a very nice facility, don't know how easy it is to get in, but in talking to the harbor master this fall they just invested a ton of dough in the facility, we stayed there this past fall for an overnight.

2017 will be a year of many big changes. My boat of the last 12 years sold in just 4 days - a major surprise - a couple months ago. After briefly considering going a couple seasons without a boat in order to do something different in the summer - like travel to interesting places - I thought better of the idea and promptly bought a larger boat. Now I need to plan a 4 to 7 day cruise to bring the boat home in the spring and also plan a new home for it, likely moving from the marina to a yacht club for the first time. I will use the winter months to plan boat projects, none of which are really necessary but which will provide a good long list of things to shop for at the boat show later this month (in Toronto). Finally I resolve to make more use of the boat - more sailing, more anchoring, more cruising - than the last two years combined.

My resolution is to cease making resolutions which I know won't be kept. Might be apathy, but I just don't care. ;)
