Using GoPro 3 a black and a white. We are a Mac house, and the files need to be converted to be manipulated in iMovie. They will likely always be too big to email, it's pretty easy to get short clips in the 100 meg range. Edit them on the computer, upload them YouTube, and set them as private if you don't want the world to find them. If you email the link to people, they can find them.
You're right, the junk you need to support them can easily add up to the camera cost, but the GoPro is easily the most diverse line of accessories available, the thing that would be really nice, and isn't available, is a separate USB charger. One where you take the battery out and charge it. Currently, you have to charge it IN the camera, and that kinda negates having extra batteries available, unless you charge them the night before sort of thing.
