Looking at a Cal 2-27, 1976 vintage.
I've been spending the last several months studying the subject. Everythng pertinent I can find here, Mainsails site, West Adviser, Don Casey's books, Inspecting the aging sailboat and This Old Boat anything and everything elses I can find on the subject that doesn't come across as quackery. Cosmetically it looks good outside and in. But lipstick on a pig is still a pig under the lipstick. I don't yet consider this boat to be a pig in lipstick.
From the tribal knowledge of the marina it seems to be in the hands of it's thrid owner since new. First owner brought it to the lake when new, he sold it to the marina and current owner bought it from the marina and did a "refurb" job. Making the boat a freshwater boat it's full life.
If cosmetics made the deal I'd be all over it already. But I've got, I hope more sense than that. The boat is on the hard with the mast stored off the boat. I'll be able to get a up close and personal look at all the standing and running rig.
I'll have more questions but for now two will do.
How much play is too much play in a cutlass bearing?
My opinion (based in part on Mainsails info and other) is that it needs to be replaced but the salesman and the owner don't seem to think it's a problem.
I'm also concerned with the age of the rig. from what I can find out is that the standing rig is original to the boat. Everything I can find that smells like a reliable source tells me that 38 year old rigging is asking for trouble.
I'll likely have more questions Friday after I've crawled through it, over it and under it like ants on a sugar pile.
The boat is sub $10K so I'm not going to go with a professional survey.
Ifeel failry confident that my jack of all trades background, good mechanical knowledge long experience with electrical and electronics and pressurized water systems can at least alert me to something that needs higher level knowledge.
Overal the boat
