winter is almost over so I can finally go back to the boat in Kingston, Ont. to get some projects done.
I'll be taking some ice climbing screws to try and remove the ice that formed with the water in the bilge, going to re-install the crib boards side boards and some other brightwork I was working on this winter, planning on removing the old battery charger so I can really test it out. going to try and remove some more brightwork to continue working on them, going to be installing cover plates on the holes left from the depth sounder and other holes on the bulkhead, and a few other projects. I also have to pay a visit to the PO to find out where the dodger is and finish the paperwork, need her signature on a paper for the transfer. going to be a busy day but that's good

Sounds like a plan!

If you can wait until Monday, the ice climbing screws shouldn't be necessary to get the ice out of the bilge. Forecast on the south side of the Lake is for 53° on Sunday and 58° on Monday. Let Mother Nature work her magic.

Be sure to cover the holes from the brightwork you remove. Need to keep the core dry. Can't remember if the Gramp 26 has wooden toe rails. If it does, don't remove them.

earlier gramp 26 had wooden toe rails but later ones (like mine) have aluminium toe rails.
Monday is a no go for me, but tomorrow and most of this week the weather is above freezing and it will be easier to remove the blocks of ice with the screws :)
going to be mainly removing the interior brightwork for now but I might remove some exterior brightwork and seal the holes with tape for now, the boat is under a tarp at the moment

Assume some of the screws you need to remove,...will not remove.

Old fasteners in fiberglass boats can be tough. Make sure you have other means of removal with you: hack saw blade holder(s), impact tool and bits, drill(s) and assorted bits, maybe a mutli tool with a few wood/nail carbide blades to slip between wood and glass,... and throw in a sawzall and some metal bits in case you lose it,... :) Then don't forget gloves, especially a heavy pair if you're working in close quarters with a sawzall.

Oh, and work lights, and plenty of batteries, bandaids,...

Yep, I've got to hang the jib back on the furler and put some interior items away in order to go out.
No ice here but then we live in rain country. Soon.

My spring work list includes:
- remove winter cover
- sand down the old VC17 on the hull before applying a fresh coat
- wash and polish the topsides before applying some wax
- replace 2 zincs (magnesium) on the prop shaft
- remove the midship cleats and repair fiberglass under them. They were added by a PO and when I tried to counter- sink the fiberglass before rebedding them with butyl tape, I punched right through the fiberglass skin.
- remove bikini track and fill screw holes.

Marina opens April 1, and I am usually the first sailboat in. Some salmon fishermen beat me, but they get paid to be out in the nasty weather ;-)

Why? Just hit the high wear areas with a fresh coat. Leave the rest. Maybe wash it down with a Scotchbrite pad. Save your shoulders.

I used VC-17 for 30 years never sanded it until I wanted saltwater compatible bottom paint.

I have lots of coats on the hull, and it is getting a bit of orange peel texture. Plus I have a few ares where the old stuff is not adhering very well (previous application I didn’t do very well).

I am not sanding it down to the gel coat, just to smooth it out or get down to good adhesion.

i usually repost every other year, and on the off years, just tough up the high wear areas.

back from the boatyard, gone 12h to work 5 ½h rest was travel and lunch, been a long day, patched some holes with some round plastic plates, re-installed the inside companionway handholds, well partially, the screws did not want to go back in, 2 of them were really stubborn and left 1 inch of unscrewed thread, going to get new screws, re-installed the companionway side boards, the boat finally is locked up. my friend and I removed about 5 inch of ice and water from the bilge, which means we were able to remove the old cabin sole (dead wood). I managed to take basic measurements for the foam I need for the berths, finally managed to remove my wall cabinet, it was really stuck there.
removed the old crown charger, man is that thing heavy
while we were emptying the bilge we removed the old bilge pump which I suspect is dead after 3 years on the hard with a lot of water.

I have a great recipe for homemade peel away if you are interested in not sanding. I've used it many times with great success.

Here is an article from Practical Sailor on too much bottom paint. Not a lot of detail but might be worth a read.

@fred1diver it sounds like you had a good day at the boat. Still, I'm glad I decided to bring the boat to Ottawa for now to get some jobs done. The 20 minute drive makes it a bit easier, although having the boat a couple hours drive away does mean you tend to commit the entire day to working and get as much done as you can to make the trip worth while.

I might have a lead on a trailer for her, so she would be easier to trailer down, either that or I'll rent a flatbed, the hassle will be to put the boat on the trailer
