...I have a bent shaft on a shroud turnbuckle - I always wondered how one of the PO's did that - must have taken a LOT of force to bend if (it will be replaced).
It actually doesn't take much force at all if the turnbuckle is leaning over sideways when the mast goes up. You might want to replace it.

KP,

Been there. Done that. Hang my head in shame often. My shrouds have those plastic covers. We were out on a nice day and I decided to fix the rigging tape on one of the lower shrouds to get rid of a wild end that was just hanging. When I peeled it back, I found about 10 wires left. The breeze was light, and we were on our way back so we sailed on. All went well. Monday, I dropped it off with Worst Marine and said "Make mine a double. That was last year. This year I'll replace the upper shrouds for good measure.

When raising masts I've gone to using short bunjee's to hold up the turnbuckles, plastic tubes and all. That's the end of the problem. I have a 3 gal pail of mast transport/raising gear. Those short bunjee's, and a few long ones, I also use to wrap all the standing rigging to the mast for transport. I include a plastic zip-loc bag to keep a pad and pencil. That way I can write down how much I loosened the rigging to drop it and any other info on this task.
