Practical use of gensets
Hi Mark -Sounds like you are ahead of the game in that you have sized your proposed genset to your electrical demands and resources. Sizing a genset to your needs is really the determining factor. I have owned two boats that are equipped with gensets, both Northern Lights 8kW units. Both boats came with them (including my current boat). I am pleased with with particular brand and have not had problems, but I wouldn't have gone to the trouble if they weren't in the boat already. I prefer a large house bank (for several reasons) and suitably equipped inverter. My current boat had air conditioning installed by the previous owner, but in my climate, I expect to use the genset mostly for Christmas cruises (if I don't win the "best decorated" award, I'll be surprised!). If you are installing a genset, I would recommend the Panda (I hear they are quiet and compact), and make sure you get the insulating box). Don't get me wrong, having an extra source of AC power sure is nice, but make sure you are willing to endure the added expense, maintenance, and noise. I'd be curious to learn more about your boat and plans.Best,Trevor
