I am planning to purchase a 5-6 KW generator in the near future and would like advice on the experience people on this foruwm have with diesel gensets. i.e. brands, rpms, freshwater cooled, reliability and service. I have sized the genset at to my electrical needs. Thanks Mark

Practical use of gensets

Hi Mark - Sounds like you are ahead of the game in that you have sized your proposed genset to your electrical demands and resources. Sizing a genset to your needs is really the determining factor. I have owned two boats that are equipped with gensets, both Northern Lights 8kW units. Both boats came with them (including my current boat). I am pleased with with particular brand and have not had problems, but I wouldn't have gone to the trouble if they weren't in the boat already. I prefer a large house bank (for several reasons) and suitably equipped inverter. My current boat had air conditioning installed by the previous owner, but in my climate, I expect to use the genset mostly for Christmas cruises (if I don't win the "best decorated" award, I'll be surprised!). If you are installing a genset, I would recommend the Panda (I hear they are quiet and compact), and make sure you get the insulating box). Don't get me wrong, having an extra source of AC power sure is nice, but make sure you are willing to endure the added expense, maintenance, and noise. I'd be curious to learn more about your boat and plans. Best, Trevor

Panda Mini 8 works fine....

We have a new 426DS and ordered the factory-installed Fisher/Panda Mini 8 and have been very satisfied. Did have a few minor issues early on but all were resolved by dealer and F/P. Unit is enclosed in the insulation pod and is very quiet. Actually not any louder than one of the air conditioning units when running.

Not happy with NorthernLights

Hi, We have a NorthernLights and we have found a design flaw. The rubber couplers that connect the salt water hoses to both ends of the heat exchanger tend to slide the clamp (because the heat exchanger is too short) Once the clamp is out of place the fresh and salt water mixes and water spills through the fill cap. (A real pain to rinse the fresh water system and empty the spill pan in a confined place) Also, the genset is mounted on a spill pan that is too high and the level of the water in it is so high that it touches the flywheel. But maybe the fault is on the shipward and not on the manufactuer. I no longer feel confident using the genset... no until I modify the heat exchanger. Good luck, Rafael
