I have been looking at a new gear reduction starter for my old Yanmar YSM 12. The old OEM starter is dragging some and is probably ready for rebuild. Do any of you have experience with these gear reduction type starters on yanmar diesels. I am hoping to improve cold weather starting with this type starter.

Geared Starters

Just put one on a '78 Perkins 4-108 and it spins that engine so fast it's amazing. Starts right away. Waiting for cold weather to set in to see how much it improves starting since the Perkins doesn't have glow plugs or intake sprayer. If you can find one that fits the Yanmar, you will love it.

Sounds Good

Pat, that sounds great. The YSM 12 does not have a glow plug either. What I hope to gain is a much faster engine RPM during starts which should help with cooler weather starting (I hope).

Put a heater in the engine compartment.

Put a heater in the engine compartment for colder weather. Maybe something like a block heater, golden rods or other device will assist in starting.

More information Please Pat

Pat can you provide some more information on the geared starter you put on your Perkins 4-108. What is the make and part number. I am interested in doing the same with my Perkins as we do a lot of winter sailing.

Source for Starters

Tim, there is a company named Masco http://www.mascostartersandalternators.com/ who sells new gear reduction starters at a reasonable price. I am planning to order one of theirs. I have no experience with the company, however, they are one source for a starter to fit your engine. I'll post how well the starter works on my YSM12. Steve, I have a heater on my engine and I also use a blow dryer on the air intake to help start the engine on cool days. I would like to get away from these starting techniques. A blow dryer and a 110 engine heater is not much help when I am on a mooring on a cool morning.

OH MY GOD!!!!

They make one for the 3GM30. 1.6 horsepower! That's stronger than the new geared starter spinning my 440cu in., 12.5:1 big block Camaro engine. And it spins it REALLY FAST! :) And the price is fair. $229.00! Where's the phone?! AND THEY MAKE ONE FOR MY YAMAHA! BUD, I am not worthy, Master,,,,
