Garelick or Panther Outboard Motor Mount

I have searched the archives of this site, but didn't quite find the answer I was looking for. I have an O'day 25 that has an older motor mount on it. My motor weighs approx 125 lbs (Mercury 9.9 four stroke - long shaft). It is a struggle to lift it up. I have looked at both the Garelick and Panther motor mounts for 4 stroke engines not weighing more than 160 lbs. I even contacted both, but neither could really tell me how easy it would be to lift my motor using their mount (which I understand as it is subjective). I asked both if they had dealers in my area, Toledo, OH, that might have a demo that I could try - neither one said they did.

My question is if any of you have either Garelick's or Panther's 4 stroke motor mount and how easy it is to lift your motor? If you could specify how heavy your motor is for comparison that would be helpful. I understand nobody can guarantee an answer since we all vary in body strength - easy for one person is difficult for another - but I hate to spend money on a new motor mount only to find out it is not any easier to lift the motor than my current motor mount.

Thanks,

Joe

When I had an outboard on a motor mount I rigged a couple of blocks to make lifting it easier.

My Honda BF100 weighed 80 some pounds (4 stroke 10 HP). 125 for 10 HP is very heavy?

Joe,

I have a 9.8 Tohatsu ~100 lb on the Garelick 71091 mount and have no trouble raising or lowering it, other than it is a long reach down when it is lowered. I'm not as spry as I once was, I'm in my mid 70's.

I have a 15 HP 4stroke Yamaha 20inch shaft on my Garelick about 130 pounds..comes up easily. I have it on a 79 H27 down low stbd. corner of stern. I often raise it under way while running to lower drag and place plate just below water line. Moves my boat at hull speed with half throttle at that setting.

Joe, I replaced the original (very wimpy) motor mount on my 1983 O'Day 23 with a new Garelick. Like others who have responded to your question, I found the Garelick mount worked very smoothly and enabled me to lift my motor very easily. I had a Honda 7.5 hp that weight 85 lbs. With my old mount, I had to struggle to lift the motor clear of the water; with the new mount, the motor sprung up easily once I released the locks.
