Furling mainsail - anyone have any experience of trying to replace with a standard non-furling sail?

Hi. On my 40 year old Kiri Fifty the mainsail is paper thin and has torn and is jammed in the furling mechanism. The main is really small and I am wondering if it is possible to replace it with a larger one that falls into a lazy bag. If anyone has any advice or experience on this I would be grateful for any help
