Several months ago I solicited some advice on this forum for purchasing a furler. I ended up buying a CDI FF4 from Cruising Direct Sails, and after sailing with it several times now I can honestly say that this is by far the best investment I have made in my sailboat to date. If anyone reading this is considering buying a furler, do it! You won't regret it. You can get a good furler for $500 or less, and if you already have a genoa jib that's in good shape you can easily get it modified by a local shop to fit your furler. If you're a relative novice like myself, you may need to hire an expert to install the furler, and this could end up costing you another $200 or so (after watching mine installed, I realized I could never have done it myself). Bottom line is that for an investment of less than $1000 you could easily double or triple your sailing enjoyment for some time to come.

I couldn't agree more. I put the same model furler as you have on my Oday 23 a couple of years ago, and I can't believe I went so long without one.

Same Model?
Mike, When you say you "put the same model furler" on your O23 do you mean the FF4 or just that it was a CDI system? I'm looking at a furler for my O23 and I understood that CDI recommends the FF2. I'd be interested why you went with the larger unit if that is what you did.

Its embarrassing
I can't remember which size I went with. I thought it was the FF4, but it might have been the FF2. I do remember it was the size that Rudy at D&R Marine had recommended for the 23. I bought it from my local sailmaker, who matched the best internet price I could find. Its a great unit.

You CAN choose whether you want the ball-bearing model or not, and from what little I know it's worth the extra $50 or so. You should also shop around on the net for a good deal. I've posted the link where I bought mine.

basic furler
furlers ARE the way to go, even on my javelin, replaced the forstay with a harken 435 system and wire luffed the jib for a one piece system. the boat may be only 14' but not having to go forward to handle the jib is worth every cent.
