I'm new to the forum and this has probably been archived. I just haven't found the archive yet!! I have a 1973 Pearson 35 shoal draft with a Hyde #10 roller furler system. The drum and rod rigging are fine. I cut the swivel off the rod, (bearings where shot, could not be replaced) and had the replacement "two part" swivel installed, (not cheap). The new part seems to have good, free movement between the inner and outer race. SAME results!! When you start to furl, the outer race makes two turns at the top of the mast and the halyard locks up on the rod. Does someone have a "trick" out there??HELP!!

I had a Hyde furler, but it's been awhile. My guess is that your problem is not with the furler, but what is commonly reffered to as "halyard wrap". This occurs when the jib halyard is parralel to the rod/ forstay. Install a halyard restrainer on the mast a few inches below the masthead and it will change the angle of approah of the halyard to the upper swivel. Google "halyard restrainer" to get more info. Schaefer makes one for less than $20.

Hope this helps

Much appreciated. Heard the same thing from several people. Ordered the Harken for 49.00 with the metal sheave. Thanks.
