Have a 77, catalina 27. Considering a CDI furler but am uncertain of which headsail to use. I have a genoa, which came with the boat but don't know which size it is for sure. What were the "stock" sails for this boat?. I am told this sail can be "worked" to be put onto the furler for about $600, I also see some packages with the furler and sail sold together. What sail would you recommend for the great lakes of Michigan. (135 or 150) Also, any know of good places to get the sail worked, or buy a combo? Thanks, Mike

Mike,

Mike, I have never sailed the Great Lakes but I do own a 27 and have both sails. I went from a 150% to a 135% and I am happy with move down in size. The 135% is easier to tac, I have better visibility and the boat handles better in the 10 to 15 knots winds. The summers in Florida I'm going to be sitting still but to be honest I motor mostly in the summer if I go out at all. It is all going to depend on you and the type of weather you sail in and how you sail. If the winds are normally over 10 knots the 135% works fine. Now your going to here from others that will tell you to get the larger sail and reef, but for me and the type of sailing I do the 135% is a better sail size. Your question about what came with the boat back in 1977? Hmmm, I would guess a 150% but then again if I bought a boat new I would order it with the sails I wanted. Your last question about spending 600 bucks to have an old Genoa cut, no way, for a little more you can find deals on new sails. Check the archives for opinions on where to get sails. good luck, Jack

Furler packages....

Mike, here is the perfect site to answer your questions, and to estimate the cost. If I had only one sail I'd get the 135%. http://thesailwarehouse.com/cgi-bin/web_store.cgi?page=storeframe.html&cart_id=
