Monks brewed beer because they had to give up solid food during the lenten fast. It was a way to get the nutrition of the grain without breaking the rules. Liquid bread with pleasurable side effects.

Prolly made the nuns look better, too. On the other hand it may be where the song “I Couldn’t Drink Her Pretty” came from.
